No better friend, no worse enemy.
The Afghans are very sloppy handling weapons, leave safeties off, and many don't take orders well. The Marines in Sangin are very careful, lots of casualties there, no place to be jacked up.

After departing his post, the uniformed police member returned with his weapon raised and pointed toward the marine," ISAF said in a statement. "The marine responded with escalation of force procedures, including shouting at the individual to put the weapon down."When the police officer failed to put down his weapon, the marine fired two shots and killed him, ISAF said. This is our insane policy? That after someone points a rifle at you you have to first ask them to lower their weapon before you can respond with force? The Insanity of the Liberals!

Looks like the Marine took appropriate action....Ahem, with the exception that he probably should have offered counseling services to the Afghan police officer before firing his weapon.
