Scott Brown ran for the Senate vowing to rein in government spending and cut the federal budget deficit. A year later, he is open to increasing the national debt limit so the government can both spend and borrow more.
The clash between his campaign rhetoric and voting record underscores the theme of the Republican's first year replacing a liberal icon, the late Sen. Edward M. Kennedy.
To the frequent surprise of Democrats, and often the chagrin of conservatives and tea party activists, Mr. Brown has largely kept his pledge to be a bipartisan legislator. He has voted bills up or down on the merits, if not with one eye on his 2012 re-election campaign.
Last month, he voted for President Obama's tax compromise, even though its tax-cut extension and unemployment benefits will add nearly $1 trillion to the deficit. And he could vote soon to raise the debt ceiling from $14.3 trillion.
"Part of it is compromise," Mr. Brown told the Associated Press last week as he sat in Mr. Kennedy's former district office, perched atop the John F. Kennedy Federal Building. "You need to make sure that you move the country forward."

We need to keep the country moving forward towards insolvency.....
Looks like the next time he runs, the RNC and some Democrats will be his only supporters.
Actually, I think his “down the middle” approach might work here in Massachusetts. I’ve heard from more than one person I’d classify as truly independent (51% of Mass. voters are independent) who countered my unflattering remarks about Scott with praise.
The difference for ol’ Scotty is that they won’t send him money like I did in 2010, and my wallet is closed to him now.
I got slapped around here before when I stated I would never vote for him again. It was said he was better than Coakley and he was a Republican.
Well, he lied to me and he is Coakley!
I will never vote for the SOB again.

.
Love that "if not" part!
I was one of those here on Free Republic who called him out before his election. He was a classic RINO libturd and he has lived down to my expectations. Anyone who claims to be a conservative and is an abortion rights advocate is a liberal. They will vote with the democrats 90% of the time.
I, too, am one who rejected Brown from the get-go, and also because he was pro-abortion. Any politician wrong on life simply cannot be trusted. If they’ll bargain away some innocent person’s life, then they’ll bargain away anything.
Besides, the guy had a nude magazine spread, and a very liberal family. The only thing that made him a “conservative” was that he claimed he liked balancing the checkbook.
And even that isn’t true. I predict he will eventually run as a Democrat.
One termer.
Fiddlesticks. Anyone who thought Brown would do more that 1) Caucus with Republicans, and 2) Vote Against 0bamaCare, was a hopeful dreamer.
We got what we could from MA. Everyone settle down. We won’t get a Ronald Reagan from Boston.
The only good news is that his fawning supporters have at least quit saying that he should run for president based on his looks.
Brown lied on the radio this week claiming he has
never been called a RINO.
Conservatives who were tricked into donating to
Brown are furious and are now calling the
SOB quite a bit more than simply RINO.
