Surgeons at Tucson's University Medical Center removed Rep. Gabrielle Giffords from a ventilator Saturday and inserted a tracheotomy tube into her neck to assist her breathing, according to the center.
Removing her from the ventilator, which means she is now breathing on her own, allows the medical team to assess her ability to speak and is another step toward stabilizing her condition so that she can leave the intensive care unit and be moved to a regular hospital room.
The tracheotomy tube in her throat provides a passageway for free movement of air and, if she begins to have trouble breathing, allows a simple way for doctors to insert a tube into her lungs to assist her breathing.
The team did not say anything about whether she was able to speak.

"Democrats worried" is correct. They were hoping she died becoming a martyr and the shooter could be conclusively proven to be a Tea Partier. That would have been the Democrats' wet dream fulfilled.

I am grateful to God for her recovery thus far and she is tracking remarkably well, exceeding the doctors prognostications and hopes.
I pray God will deliver Gabby from this evil tragedy and hope he gives her more strength and vibrance than she already possessed.

I wasn’t familiar with her before this happened, but she strikes me as an admirable person. Not your typical leftie crooked Democrat.
It strikes me as strange that the press virtually ignores the fine judge who died, or the wonderful little girl who died, and talks about nobody but their Democrat congresswoman.
The memorial service was for her—odd, since it was the others who died.
But the media just can’t get over the original propaganda theme that they jumped on: right wing hate killing a Democrat.
The Sheriff told the news media that she was dead, so that’s what they built their propaganda around. Then it turned out that she wasn’t, and NPR had to apologize for getting that basic fact wrong.
It’s not her fault that the lefties seized on her as a tool to bash conservatives with. But I think the title is correct. They wish she was dead so they could profit from it. We wish her well. Odd, but true, I think.
