LAKEWOOD, N.J. – One moment, they were just talking, the young police officer in the patrol car who had rolled up alongside the even younger pedestrian.
It was a low-key give-and-take, question-and-answer exchange Friday afternoon, not hostile or confrontational.
That changed in an instant, when the pedestrian pulled a handgun out from his baggy clothing, stepped back and fired three shots into the officer, who never had a chance.
Patrolman Christopher Matlosz slumped behind the wheel of his police cruiser, mortally wounded, his gun still in its holster. The gunman ran away, touching off a massive manhunt by land and air that continued Saturday, with authorities vowing he would soon be caught and punished.

Surprisingly, they gave a description of the suspect.
Not surprising was that description.
I live 5 minutes away from where the shooting happened and saw the police officer in the gym regularly. Everyone in the area is stunned, saddened and fearful as the gunman is still at large in the community. Lakewood has a large black community and many gangs. Some are speculating that the officer was killed as part of an initiation right of one of the gangs. A very sad day for the Lakewood police force and the community, prayers for his family.
I not the least bit surprised.
NJ has strict rules on handgun purchases, so it shouldn’t be hard to find the purchaser, right?
My parents recently moved to retire in Whiting. Up until recently I hadn’t realized about the gang thing going on in Lakewood. Wow.

LAKEWOOD, N.J. – Police signed murder charges Saturday against a 19-year-old man they accuse of killing a Lakewood, N.J., police officer who had driven up beside him and started to question him.
A massive manhunt is under way for Jahmell W. Crockam, who is charged with the murder Friday of Lakewood Patrolman Christopher Matlosz.
