90 Pregnancies At One Memphis High School
Chicago Tribune ^ | 1/14/11 | Bonny Kinney

About 90 students at a Memphis High School are either pregnant, or have been recently.

The startling news was confirmed by a high ranking city official and comes as the community plans to roll out a new initiative to help combat the problem.

However, one Frayser High School graduate says teen pregnancy is not a new problem for the school.

"When we would come back from summer break, there would be a thousand people pregnant. We were like, what's going on?" joked Alicia Williamson, who graduated from Frayser in 2004.

"There were a whole lot of bellies. You had to watch out so you didn't bump into them. Being 2011, I thought a lot of them would have thought this is not the right way to go, having babies during school time," she added.

The organization, Girls, Inc. teaches girls about preventing pregnancy.

Deborah Hester Harrison, who heads the organization, says Memphis' teen pregnancy rate stands at between 15 and 20 percent, almost twice the national average.

Easy way to stop this: CUT WELFARE or award it only in married couples.

Wont ever happen though.

"...I thought a lot of them would have thought..."

Well, there's your problem.

Bush's fault.

Or Palin's vitriol.

I can't decide.

I forgot about food stamps.

Gotta have those food stamps to trade for liquor.

*sigh* One day they’re going to figure out what causes that (pregnancy) and let the stupid people know so that they can avoid ruining their lives

Ever see the movie “Idiocracy”? I used to think it was a comedy- now I think it is a documentary.

I sincerely doubt there are more than a tiny handful of girls old enough to get pregnant who don’t know how it happens and how to prevent it. It is not a matter of education. It is a matter of a culture that doesn’t care. At best it is ignored, at worst it is glorified. When I taught high school the girls got all excited when one of their peers got pregnant. The reality of a baby didn’t set in until well after the fact, and frankly, the girls who are getting pregnant are not the sorts who learn from other people’s mistakes.

I used to live in memphis. Went to White Station High and MSU. And you are correct, it isn't an isolated incident.

"We were, like, what's going on?"

I rest my case.

It used to be, that when a gal got preggers in High School, they sent her to the “bad boys and girl” school across town.

This let everyone know that his was frowned upon, and that you would be uprooted, and life would not go on as normal, except with you being the center of attention of all your friends.

A girl sued to stay in real High School and won.

Now they stay.

Pregnancy is socially contagious. Young women see another young woman pregnant and getting attention, and not much impact upon her life (yet!), and they think “Why not me?”.

That is how this spreads like wildfire in our High Schools. The social stigma is gone, every accommodation is made, and the girl gets to be “Princess for a day”, every day for a couple months.

Dare I say that there are many fewer baby daddies than pregnancies? In my former life as a bureaucrat employment "counselor" I ran into a couple or more losers who BRAGGED to me they had 3 to 6 girlfriends pregnant--creepy, loathsome, trash, thinking that made them somebody big. But what the heck--they knew the gubmint gonna take care of them.

Self esteem--that's the most important thing, and if you gotta instigate a few pregnancies, well...the reward is an expanded ego, and according to libs that's a good thing.
