Some 31 million U.S. television viewers tuned in to see President Barack Obama lead a memorial tribute to victims of the deadly shooting rampage in Tucson, Arizona, according to TV ratings provider Nielsen.
The emotionally charged speech, in which Obama urged Americans not to politicize a tragedy that left six people dead and 13 others wounded, drew generally high marks for his bid to balance words of consolation with a call for national unity.
The seven-network tally for Obama's 30-minute address, carried live on Wednesday night from the University of Arizona, topped the 29 million viewers the president drew in August for his speech on U.S. involvement in Iraq.
It fell just shy of the 32 million people who tuned in to watch an address he delivered in June about the massive oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico, Nielsen reported on Thursday.
By comparison, the most highly rated show on U.S. television, Fox network's "American Idol," typically averages roughly 25 million viewers for any given episode.
Obama commanded a bigger audience yet, 48 million viewers, with his last State of the Union address in January 2010, according to Nielsen.

Some folks like clowns.....!Does’nt mean a thing,,
The football game drew more.
And all of the players had a higher IQ than the Obamaloon.
Yup, we all know about those intellectual jocks.
Some are very easily entertained...even at Memorials.
Isn’t that a little under 10% of the US population?
Cause, that isn’t a striking number turning in the President.
Wonder how many were as appalled about the t-shirts as I was.
That just means millions of Americans got to see the freak-show Obama campaign rally which made a farce of the memorial service intended for the Tucson victims.
I am certain a good number of those viewers were as appalled at that spectacle as I was.
This (Me)morial service, was the first State-run worshipping of the State, and oh yes, at the sacrifice and death of State politicos. It was an adoration of Barack Hussein Obama, with his minister of State Police (the American equivalent of the GRU), and the minister of American/Sharia Law. It was on the backs of those People of the Disunited States, having given their all for the future of the State.
My thoughts exactly...
It was the welstone memorial part 2.
I am appaled because I didn’t have any choice. All the major networks were showing Obama — that’s why he got 31 million viewers.
So it really is all about ratings.
I had it on, but muted.....
I would have liked to have seen them rise above the political campaigning and do something a little more respectful of the dead.
I’m appalled that they would track and report the number of people who watched. It is obvious that it was about HIM rather than those who were supposed to be memorialized. I believe that the media and Democrats have over reached with this.
America’s youth are unfortunately very ignorant regardless of their so-called Academic accomplishments, ultimately, they will be responsible in large part for the destruction of America.
The minor league propagandists from “Reuters”, “AP”, etc. do remember how Goebbels and his family ended up?
Where should we start?
31 million U.S. television viewers
Only the best and the brightest I am sure!.....
......tuned in to see President Barack Obama lead a memorial tribute............
No.....actually I think they tuned in to see a "Memorial" "service" dedicated to the people that lost their lives.
I am glad it was all about the victims. Ridiculous
I was one of the 280,881,000 Americans who DIDN’T watch!
