It's becoming increasingly clear that Jared Lee Loughner is mentally unstable. Sarah Palin's bullseye on Arizona Democratic Rep. Gabrielle Giffords did not direct Loughner to shoot Giffords point-blank in the head on January 8, 2011.
Did the vitriol in political discourse, crosshairs and phrases like "Don't retreat, reload" (by Sarah Palin) or "If they bring a knife to the fight, we bring a gun" (by President Obama) influence Loughren's state of mind?
Perhaps in an idiosyncratic way, according to Dr. Jeffrey Lieberman, chairman of psychiatry at Columbia University. "Political rhetoric provided some of the context for his thinking, the pretext for his actions, but the core reasons for his actions were his psychosis," Lieberman told National Journal.
Regardless of what motivated Loughner to pull the trigger, the tragedy in Tucson has put the tone of political discourse, and those who tend to inflame more than inform, in the spotlight.
Campaigning has often been rough and tumble and full of venom and half-truths since the founding of the country, but as Giffords told MSNBC on March 25, 2010, after her campaign headquarters in Tucson was vandalized, "In the years that some of my colleagues have served--20 to 30 years--they've never seen it like this."
In reference to her district being targeted with the image of a crosshairs gun sight by Sarah Palin, Giffords said, "We're on Sarah Palin's targeted list, but the thing is, the way she has it depicted, it has the crosshairs of a gun sight over our district. When people do that they have to realize that there are consequences to that action."
But Palin doesn't seem to think that there are any negative consequences associated with her campaign words and images.

Don't carry the Lefties water for them...
IBTZ.
Look at all the idiotic posts you HAD. All gone by-bye.
As you will be also - if you don’t wise up.
And if you bothered to inform yourself of more than MSM spin, you'd know that DailyKos also had a post with targeting of Gifford's district as well.
I do appreciate you re-posting my remarks, by way of snitching to Onyx, which were then removed, i.e, censored. Verrrrry interesting.....

You’re pretty incompetent, aren’t you? It’s not MY posts that have been deleted, troll-wad. They’re YOURS.
But here is my response:
The fact remains that Palin had gunsights on GiffordsYour twisting of the reality of the situation to that degree is dispicable.
That is an outright lie, propagated by the MSM.
The democrats had targets...you know those things that people shoot at...on a map over Republican races.
This crosshairs stuff is nonsense. I would think your recent posts would be beneath you.
Shame on you, have some respect for the people affected by this massacre.
Shameful post by the troll.
News to you, troll, Jim Robinson sees Sarah Palin as a *conservative patriot*!
This was at the Tea Party Express rally in Reno, NV last week (Go Sharron Angle!). The lady in the cowboy hat with the sweet smile is my wife Sheila. And that’s Syncro’s left eyeball in the upper left as he focuses his video camera.
Sarah was introduced to me by Sal Russo (leader of the Tea Party Express) who introduced me as Jim Robinson from freerepublic.com. She said thank you for all you guys have done, then leaned forward and gave me a little cheek to cheek hug. I took it as she loves the FReepers and pass it on to all of you!!
Woo hoo!! FR is Palin Country!!
I really don’t feel a need to respond to the Farbers of the World. He will trash Palin no matter what. Yes, Palin was victimized, primarily by that weasel, Kos. But it wasn’t only her that was victimized, it was the Republicans, talk radio, the tea partiers, and on and on. They weren’t victimized by the shootings, they were victimized by the Farber’s and the Kos’, who blamed them for the shootings.
Being accused of murder without a shred of evidence doesn’t make you a victim any more?
Yada yada. I don’t expect you to laugh; you seem very serious about the censorship. Don’t worry; I’ve seen it here before. You just cling to that First Amendment while you do it too.
However, you leave up the comments versus mine, which makes the others look kind of stupid. As if they didn’t already....
What’s funny is that you’re telling me I should keep up with Daily Kos, when I don’t think I’ve ever looked at the site.
LOLOLOL.
*Snitching* to me? Posting to me is snitching?
I have no powers here!
Oh I believe you, your mind just works the same way.
There are a few of you here at FR that could write for Matthews, Maddow, Olbermann and Schultz.
You all seem to be channeling each other.
However, Onyx may want to have your #67 removed, as it is a repeat of my post which she removed.
Perhaps you can make the case that the First Amendment prohibits a private website from deciding what can be posted and not posted.
Of course, I doubt it will be any more convicincig than your lame argument parroting the MSM talking points about Palin and the crosshairs ad, so don't bother. Your own posts discredit your attempts to label yourself a conservative.
I’m content to leave all decisions to the admin moderators. I am not about to hit abuse to spare you any shame.
I just think it’s a big waste to defend the indefensible, which is what Palin’s followers do 24/7.
I also think it’s beneath any conservative, as one poster did, to attack someone who is fighting for her life, namely Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.
Fingers crossed. Where’s that surveyor’s mark?
Im content to leave all decisions to the admin moderators. I am not about to hit abuse to spare you any shame.
I’ve sure thought that throughout the aftermath. Not too sure who’s worse off in this mess.
Still haven't seen the proof.
