A man wrongfully convicted for a 1989 double-murder in San Francisco has been ordered freed after spending 18 years in prison.

Prosecutors told a judge Tuesday that key witnesses are dead or unavailable and they will not retry 40-year-old Caramad Conley for the killings of Roshawn Johnson and Charles Hughes.

Conley has been serving two terms of life in prison without parole.

The judge last month ruled that Conley was wrongfully convicted because the star witness, police informant Clifford Polk, lied on the stand. Polk has since died.

He should get something. I don’t know how the amount is determined though.

Well, shoot. If they’d just executed him right away this wouldn’t have happened.

Doesn’t sound like to me that they know if he’s innocent or not.

I agree. But the article didn’t give many details, either.

I don’t know how they determine the amount.

In Houston, it comes out to about $80k per yer of incarceration.

It was a police INFORMANT who lied and I would suspect the cops and DA knew he was lying.
You are apparently too trusting of cops and DAs.

Did not see where it was proved officer polk lied.

You also did not see that Polk was a police informant (stoolie), not a cop.

“You are apparently too trusting of cops and DAs.”

Exactly the opposite. I was raised to always trust cops and help the police, about five years ago - I will never forget I was discussing the police and told my children that they are all union thugs only caring about themselves and their unions.

It shocked me as for the first time ever I was not supportive of my local police. They however have earned it.

BTW, I have never been arrested. My only interface with them was a got a ticket a few years back and I had given to police charities.

I am sure like politicians, there are a few good cops but they work, live in a bad system the corrupts them.

That’s a lot for wages, but 27/7 for 18yrs has got to be hard to put a price on.

same here. I was raised to trust the police - always.

But years and two horrific incidents later ( one involving a crooked cop who was later busted ) I do not trust them in the least.

Its enough to read about such police officers in the papers but to have first hand experiences is enough for me.

Two free murders

Yeah, lets just ignore this tiny itty bitty fact...

The judge last month ruled that because the star witness, police informant Clifford Polk, lied on the stand.

What's the big deal. He was only their "Star" witness...Lets keep him in prison until he's dead!

Besides, it'll make us feel better!
