Personally, if my kid shot a federal judge and nearly killed a congresswoman, I'd be all like, "Come in, come in, look at anything you want, do you guys need some coffee?"

And I'm a big constitutional guy.

Yeah, I'm a big constitutional guy, too.

I have allowed a full up search of my property without a warrant on one occasion, and they have searched without my presence or permission on another.

Circumstances can make such a search reasonable or at least understandable.

I am surprised we have heard or read almost nothing about the killer’s parents. We knew all about Hinckley’s parents—they were “wealthy” and “Republicans”— about 12 hours after President Reagan was shot.

Radio host Don Imus once told a story about witnessing a shooting years ago out on the street outside his New York City home. This was back in his drinking/narcotics days.

The police who responded to the scene canvassed the neighborhood and interviewed witnesses (including him). The police came to his door, asked a bunch of questions, and went over to the window from where he said he had seen the shooting, did some measurements, took some photos, etc.

He said he had a line of cocaine all laid out on his coffee table ready for "consumption" while this was all going on, and the police (who clearly knew what it was) just went about their business and pretended not to see it. I guess it would have gotten a little messy in the courts if they had busted him for it, especially since they might have needed his help later on as a witness in the case.
