Five years of higher taxes, $12.5 billion in spending cuts part of Brown's budget plan

SACRAMENTO -- Gov. Jerry Brown is calling for $12.5 billion in cuts, including deep pay cuts for state employees and a "vast" restructuring of government operations.

To close the entire $25.4 billion budget deficit, Brown also will seek an extension of sales, auto and income taxes -- some for as long as five years to coincide with a long-term realignment plan to shift responsibilities from state to local governments.

"These cuts will be painful, requiring sacrifice from every sector of the state, but we have no choice," Brown said in a statement before his news conference today. "For 10 years, we've had budget gimmicks and tricks that pushed us deep into debt. We must now return California to fiscal responsibility and get our state on the road to economic recovery and job growth."

Most are applauding Brown on the cut proposals but it remains to be seen of the dem legislature and unions will fight Brown as aggressively as they fought Arnold.

Article does not detail completely where spending cuts will be made and to me where the spending cuts will be made is the real news on this subject. It's easy to talk about spending cuts until people get down to the details are worked.

With just a quick glance, it appears that this is a better approach than anything Arnold ever proposed.

Brown’s a jerk. He’s NOT stupid. He knows he’ll get the extension on the taxes from his groupies in the Legislature, and the cuts THEY will reject make one great show for Jerry.

Higher taxes.

Oh yea, that’ll solve everything.

I recommend that businesses send their jobs to Texas now and save themselves the hassle.

Anyone who thinks those tax increases are meant to be temporary is out of their mind.

SEIU wisely agreed to the deal Arnold gave them because the writing was on the wall that Jerry had something to prove. The remaining unions who held out against Arnold are going to regret that bright idea.

12.5b in spending cuts and 12.5b in new spending! you know the unions won’t put up with losing a red cent.

While spending cuts are important, the question which needs to be #1 at every time a microphone is turned on is, "What are you doing to reduce the headcount of the state's public emplyee payroll?"

"Adapt or cut loose" should be the policy regarding every employee of every department.

A weekly visit to the local DMV usually paints a pretty good picture. A hundred new hires to a hundred existing hires creates not one iota of increased productivity. It merely ushers in a hundred more people to fill in for the breaks and administrative time of the other 100.

“Higher taxes. Oh yea, that’ll solve everything.”

In California they can raise taxes to 100% and it will solve nothing because the various laws and court orders have created an annual 8% structural deficit. That means for every dollar California takes in it is obligated to spend $1.08 - and that’s the thing that needs to be fixed first. It just won’t happen until the state is broke.

Same old thing. Raise taxes then renege on the cut government spending part.

He really wants to shut the borders so the taxpayers and businesses don’t escape.

Or better yet make businesses and individuals that move out of California pay taxes on their income earned in their new state for 10 years. They benefited from living in the state, why not make them pay?

Sarcasm, but don’t you think in his heart he wants to do this?

Imagine if a Republican (Whitman) proposed this. All hell would break loose sounding like this “ Tax cuts for the rich, bailouts for Wall Street, record corporation profits and Whitman asks the CA middle class worker to sacrifice. Oh the inhumanity. Oh the injustice,

It's been a while since I has seen anyone post that they wish McCain was president, months anyway. You think they finally figured out that with McCain as president Democrats would have won a third sweep in 2010?

If McCain were president he would be slamming the Tea Party and Conservatives constantly, and the Democrats would still hold the House and the Senate.

As it is, he’s basically treading very carefully around the mine-field he installed to take out Conservatives. He is ‘severely’ damaged goods and he knows it.

“. . .extension on the taxes from his groupies in the Legislature,”

These taxes would have to be approved by voters. Don’t think it will happen.
