What’s your rationale for why a Republican administration in Hawaii defended Obama’s birth there and the legitimacy of his original birth records so vigourously?

The Republican administration, as you call it consists of Linda Lingle and Chiyome Fukino. Lingle made a couple of comments on a radio show a long time AFTER the controversy had been around. Fukino made three very carefully worded public statements that each avoided declaring Obama's alleged COLB to be legitimate. This is neither a 'vigorous' defense of original birth records or the legitimacy of Obama's alleged COLB ... far from it.

I don’t find it the least bit strange that a Republican Governor being forced to carry the water for a leftist Democrat who was running against her party’s candidates would not be “vigorous” in her defense of the facts. I would describe Governor Lingle’s tone in her radio interview as “begrudgingly frustrated.”
I’m betting that there was nothing in the world that Governor Lingle would have rather done than expose Obama as a fraud and force his withdrawal from the presidential race but the facts just didn’t give her that opportunity.

Perhaps Obama was really born in Canada but his grandparents bribed a Health Bureau official back in 1961 to insert a Hawaii birth certificate in the files for him. Hawai’i is a very “hang loose” place. So when Fukino and Lingle say that there is a Hawaii birth certificate in the files for him, they are telling the truth because it is there and it says exactly what they have reported it as saying.

When a Governor is speaking on an issue, the Governor represents the state and the state administration. On a state level, no official can be more authoritative than the Governor.
Governor Lingle’s key statements were:
(1)”...and so I had my health director who is a physician by background, go and personally view the birth certificate in the birth records nof the Department of Health,”.
(2)”..and that’s just a fact.”
(3)”It’s been established. He was born here.”

Dr. Fukino’s key statement was:
(1)”...verifying Barack Hussein Obama was born in Hawaii and is a natural born American citizen.”

It is obvious that the statements and defense by the Hawaiian Republican Administration were vigorous enough for most rational persons, and Congress including the Speaker of the House, John Boehner. Whether it was vigorous enough for you, doesn't really matter in the grand scheme of things. The one body who could initiate an action against Obama is Congress and they seem satisfied with Hawaii's response.
