Maybe this will wake up some people that we need to reverse tracks bigtime when it comes to this drug and slam on the felonies for any amount.

Naw, easier to go after the tea party or something.

It's been several years, but the process is probably still the same.

You come to the station at 0600. You sign many papers. You then get your height, weight, and blood pressure. You then get to blow into a breathalyzer and pee in a cup.

At this point, we were offered a mini bible with a camouflage cover. I took one. (it's a good read)

We then had to lift a weighted bar over our heads. Then you get the “Ball” check. Mostly to make sure you do not have a hernia, but also, to make sure you are the sex you say you are.

They then make you duckwalk and talk to the physician about any concerns.

If all checks are good, you will normally board a plane the same day and arrive at your services basic training base.

The MEPS are there to weed out those who should not be serving.

I could see him going in and then being rejected after talking one on one with the physician. They grill you about everything.

I read somewhere that an army recruiter said that he never got past the urine analysis.

Typically, a prospective recruit will take an "unofficial" urinalysis at the recruiting office before they're sent down to MEPS for a much more extensive battery of tests (including an "official" urinalysis). MEPS is a time-consuming an expensive affair and recruiters don't want the repercussions of sending a "hot" recruit and wasting everyone's time so they try and find out beforehand if there's drugs in the potential recruit's system.

As soon as they announced his name I did a pipl.com search on him and pulled up the drug arrest. I tweeted it publicly and sent the link to Michelle Malkin. I knew from the arrest he was no Afghan vet. We need to all donate to whoever runs against Linda Lopez and that idiot Sherriff from Pima County.

If Leftist Loughren thought rightwing Palin wanted him to shoot Giffords, he would have protected Giffords.

Does a drug conviction preclude someone from buying a gun?

If it's a felony charge. In most jurisdictions, the amount of controlled substance the cops caught him with factors into the severity of the charge. Also, prosecutors often knock the charge down to a misdemeanor (even if the offense is technically in felony territory), just to get the perp to plead out. There is a *lot* of this stuff clogging up the courts, so the borderline cases are dealt with as "expediently" as possible.

So yes, it may still have been legal for this guy to have purchased a gun.

Saw a copy of his personal page, either on Facebook or Myspace. It was posted on FR yesterday, and linked to other websites as well. He claimed he wanted to meet men (not women).

I don't know if I'd put too much credit in that. As soon as Shep read his name on Fox News, bogus Facebook pages started popping up all over the place.

Not saying it isn't true, just that many of those FB pages were obviously fake (including, I'd imagine, the ones that had Loughner describing himself as a fan of Sarah Palin and Glenn Beck).

There were fake pages set up under his name as soon as his name was made public.

I saw it yesterday afternoon very shortly after the shooting. The blog that posted it said it had already been taken down and they couldn’t link to it anymore.

I believe you can still find it here on FR. It was posted yesterday.

My brother has a New Testament with a desert camo cover which was given to him by the Gideons.
He’s an Army colonel.

The Afghan veteran claim came right of the bat. Where did the media get this information? Maybe from the “Big Sis” list of typical terrorist suspects.

Anyhow, the left media are trying to tie the killer to the Tea Party because they are “anti-government”, why don’t they tie Laughner to anti-government extremists like Rosie O’Donnell who claimed that the government was complicit in the 9/11 attack?

I agree. We must point out that this spree killing happened on Sheriff C. Dupnik’s watch and he did nothing to prevent it. The Dems blamed Bush for 9/11, now it is time to blame this dim sheriff not doing his job.

Interesting, I wonder if that’s something they do now but didn’t in the 70s & 80s, either way I can’t imagine it done while processing - maybe at the base chapel?

I don’t know exactly when or where he got it. He’s had it a long time. I do know it was printed and distributed by Gideons.
