I'll be honest. I don't know if it's exactly accurate to say _she_ was the target.

Yes, she was shot, but the picture forming of the shooter suggests more of a strike against gov't and she happened to be the local face of that gov't.

That a congress WOMAN was shot, and a Democrat, does seem to appeal to the media. I think I mentioned yesterday in another reply, it fits with their narrative about "angry rightwing, gun lovers and hate radio." The idea is so part of their world view, they don't even realize when it fails to fit the facts.

When is Obama gonna speak up to tell us that the MSM “acted stupidly?”

“The seriousness of this tragedy has nothing to do with a conservative federal judge being shot and killed, but that a Democrat politician was shot.”

I don’t think that is correct either. That it was a democrat is irrelevant to the “seriousness” of this incident. Personnally, I don’t believe conventional “politics” had ANYTHING to do with this. The killer is an extreme nut case that doesn’t belong to any political party. He had some nutty “grudge” that he took out on an available target. If the congresswoman had of been Republican, he probably would have shot her as well. There is NO rational agenda working here. This person is just nuts.

The sheriff may have been speaking more out of grief than political bias last night. I had the impression he knew the murdered judge well. I may be mistaken.

Screaming faces on TV and uninvolved political grandstanders, like Dick Durban, wouldn't have that excuse.

If Todd Palin went on a "rampage", an entire Congressional district would be field dressed and jerked before the first call to 911 came in.

Heh. I do marvel at the man's forebearance.

“liberal judges don’t attend church.”

That’s because they’ll burst into flames when they set foot into a church.

This is where I have to ask a question...

Do we know for certain the judge was not being followed?

And if not that, given this clown’s online ranting and his behavior description from classmates, he could have brought along a not-so-close friend then said “hold my beer and watch this,” much to that friend’s horror.

The judge was a Bush appointee and had actually recently made a couple of controversial (because they were conservative) rulings regarding immigration.

However, he wasn’t expected to be there and had simply stopped by the Safeway to go shopping after morning mass. He knew the Congresswoman (who herself was pretty conservative for a Dem) and just walked over spontaneously to greet her.

By the time it reaches the managing editor he or she, often erroneously, assumes it's been fact-checked.

Your inside view is very valuable. I really think that in many cases journalism is like playing telephone. By the time the information makes it to the press, mistakes have become embedded and each subsequent repetition adds more.

But nobody at the end really has any way of verifying or clarifying the story, so not all of the "twisting" of a story is intentional. Perhaps the first reporter had a bias - or simply got his/her facts wrong - but the people at the end of the chain just go with what reaches them, regardless.

Another Freeper pointed out that the killer hated the government - any government, since he was a nutcase anarchist - but he also hated the Constitution, and Gifford was one of the Congress members who read the Constitution aloud the other day. She read the 1st Amendment, incidentally.

Paranoid schizophrenics often feel persecuted by things, or feel that people are using things (everything from random noises in the water pipes to documents being read aloud in public) to persecute them. Schizophrenics are very self-obssessed, and they feel that everything is directed at them.

So it’s possible that he shot her because he regarded her as being behind his “persecution” by the Constitution, or as representing it.

But it’s still the fault of the Tea Party, right?

On TV it became hour upon hour upon hour of PALIN bashing and nasty accusatory remarks about the Tea Party.

Based on Loughner's favorite books and incoherent YouTube ramblings, he's much more likely to have been influenced by BoyBlue's diatribe on Daily Kos (Giffords "is now DEAD to me!") than by anything Sarah or Tea Partiers said.

The third or fourth person in the food chain for an article and its associated art is the copy editor. He or she has the task of making sure everything ties in properly and that the style book has been followed. Things like making sure if someone is referred to by last name only that the full name has appeared earlier in the article. It's a horrible job. Also have the job of making sure everyone in a photo is properly ID’d. Everyone hates your guts. And it's a tough job. If an error slip through the copy editor gets the blame, deserved or not.

Copy editor is also responsible for fact checking. Everything stated in the article as fact must be able to be established by independent source. If the writer says so-in-so is so-and-so’s brother-in-law then the copy editor had better be able to provide the confirmation.

I was quite surprised at just how much goes into the publishing of a daily newspaper. And it all has to be done every day, day in and day out, even Christmas. It's truly a fascinating world. I wish I had gotten into it earlier in my work life. As it was, it turned out to be my last ‘real’ job before retiring.

The paper where I worked prided itself in having printed an edition every day for over 100 years! That's quite an accomplishment. At one time it was a family-owned paper and one of the best in the South. It was bought out by a news conglomerate and it by all accounts of those who had been there for 30 or 40 years it was never the same after that. Very conservative under the original owners, and even after the takeover it would still be considered conservative by newspaper standards.

I was in the news photo department and it was a real education!

Good analysis by a person with mental health background on FOX this afternoon. He pretty well nailed it.

Any one with schizophrenia in the family would have seen the signs (and also know how difficult it is for family to get help for the person if they are of age) Laws need to be changed for the mentally ill. It must be easier for family to get them some help!

On set late teens early twenty is the number one clue. Only a small percentage are dangerous to other people, usually kill themselves and/or self medicate with alcohol or drugs.

I expected right from the beginning that it was just a coincidence the guy came out of the store and that he was not connected with the shooter

Yes there was. Judge Roll was appointed in 1991 by President George H. Walker Bush
