Watchdogs want 'oathgate' probe
The Hill ^ | 01/07/11 | Russell Berman

Two government watchdogs are calling for an ethics investigation into the reception a House Republican held in the Capitol while the 112th Congress was being sworn in on Wednesday.

The Campaign Legal Center and the Sunlight Foundation said Friday that the Office of Congressional Ethics should look into whether Rep. Mike Fitzpatrick (R-Pa.) violated House rules by soliciting campaign contributions for his swearing-in ceremony.

And the top Democrat on the House Rules Committee, Rep. Louise Slaughter (D-N.Y.), on Friday called on Republicans to “use their investigative powers to clarify the circumstances surrounding the issue.”

The Campaign Legal Center and the Sunlight Foundation

Well if he hadn’t yet been sworn in, how could he be in violation of House rules?

Let ‘em bark. We already know that a Representative’s term of office begins when the calendar and the clock says it does, and that one of the pieces of paper a Representative-elect signs during the transition is his oath of office.

Republican or Democrat - We need to get the special interest money out of politics. I’m all for allowing unlimited volunteer help, but limiting money.

We have expensive receptions, coronations, inaugurations and fund raising by new politicos all being paid for by private donors. It is naive to think they expect nothing in return. If they expected nothing in return it should be required to be anonymous contributions. I could buy into it then.

Perhaps they could nail them for impersonating a Member of Congress.

I would vote for a Dog before I would vote Democrat on a National or State election but saying that if he did this and it is a violation he should be punished. Those two Republicans that did not show up on time to be sworn in should be punished severally also and maybe even recalled. It is time to put a stop to the S**t.Enough is enough.

They want a full blown investigation on this, but let all the ethics violations slide when the Dems were in power.

Cool - let’s begin with pResident Obungle himself, who couldn’t even get through the presidential oath of office without hurting himself. It was such a disaster that they had to redo the who thing again, in private as not to embarass himself and the office along with the entire nation yet a second time. They should start immediately!

A good response to this would be a monolithic call by the pubs to have selected Dems and Repubs investigated for the violation of THEIR oaths of office.

Of course I’m ignorantly presuming that the oath included something like the Military’s “Protect and Defend the Constitution” statement.

Any noise raised re this would help the freshmen do more about returning congress to constitutional authority. Including the Treasonous repubs in the accusations would give it more media play.
