Gov. Jerry Brown to eliminate education post

California governors have appointed secretaries of education for decades, but political observers say it is no surprise Gov. Jerry Brown plans to eliminate the office.

The new governor's plans reflect his no-frills style and his desire to flatten bureaucracies, beginning with the executive office. Some education officials have regarded the secretary as an unnecessary position: California already elects a superintendent of public instruction and has an 11-member board, appointed by the governor, to oversee the Department of Education.

Education insiders are not expected to oppose the move, and many are cheering it. David Sanchez, president of the powerful California Teachers Association, said he has always viewed the secretary of education position as redundant...

Any time the CTA is for something, I get paranoid, but this seems like a reasonable move.

“Education insiders are not expected to oppose the move, and many are cheering it.”

Then something isn’t right.

Paranoia with regard to a public employee union supported measure and reason are no mutually exclusive.

I suspect that probably the education union objected to the governor having an assistant that occasionally gave them trouble. They don’t want the governor telling them what to do—just paying them.

Not exactly a big savings, either. One salary.

Some how the word ‘’education’’ and Jerry Brown together in a sentence is ...odd.

The list of appointees named by the Governor to the Board that I saw did not have a Republican among them.

Any education official that likes a move like this, sees it as empowering them a bit more. IMO, that’s all this reveals.

Brown is an eccentric. You never know what the guy will do next. If the Lefties think it’s all gonna be wine and roses from here, they don’t know this guy.

I suspect he’s going to make a lot more Lefties angry than Schwarzenegger ever did.

He’s going to have us steaming too, no doubt about it.

David Sanchez, president of the powerful California Teachers Association,
said he has always viewed the secretary of education position as redundant...

Translation:
The other “educators” hope to split up the salary/benefits of the now
removed sec. of education.
Before California financially falls into the Pacific.

of the Californian voters.)

The job is just another one of those appointments to reward the governors most rabid and loyal followers.

Arnie gave us Dick Riordan, Alan Bersin, Bonnie Reiss, and a couple others as Sec of Education. Brown couldn’t have found any more liberal appointees. Doing away with the post is an improvement.

Hey, Norm... how did I miss this one?

State Schools Chief Jack O’Connell Congratulates
Bonnie Reiss on Appointment as Secretary of Education

SACRAMENTO — State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell today congratulated former State Board of Education member Bonnie Reiss on her selection by Governor Schwarzenegger as Secretary of Education.

“I look forward to continuing to work with Bonnie Reiss as she takes on this new role,” O’Connell said. “Bonnie is knowledgeable about the challenges and opportunities faced by public education during these difficult economic times. With her leadership, the collaboration between my office and the Governor’s Office of Secretary of Education will continue as we work together to implement education reform efforts and secure critical federal funding for California schools.”

“Education insiders are not expected to oppose the move, and many are cheering it.”

Then something isn’t right.

What isn't right is the story would be "Education insiders are outraged" if this was a Republican governor.
