Congress should take up work on comprehensive immigration reform once the U.S. borders are secure, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said Wednesday.
McCain, a longtime proponent of comprehensive reform who had tacked right in his race for reelection last year, said that an immigration deal could be an area of compromise between Republicans and Democrats.
"Once we get the border secured and we can get the border secured I would look forward to working on comprehensive immigration reform," the 2008 Republican presidential nominee said on NBC's "Today" show.
The Arizona senator had in the past favored legislation that would give illegal immigrants a path to citizenship. But McCain tacked to his right after facing a primary challenge from former Rep. J.D. Hayworth (R). . .

This guy just does not understand anything.
Secure the borders...then make everyone a citizen.
Yeah, well what about all the other people from around the world who are trying to get in here legally?
Putz.
Here we f-ing go again! Perfect innigration reform...Secure the borders and kick the bastards OUT!
Apparently this IDIOT does not understand that as long as he and other congressional brain-stems continue to promise the golden ring to illegal invaders the border will NEVER be secure.
Pretty risk-free, meaningless statement from a donkey-bleeping RINO...
Borders “never” can be secured..and so hence..
A million dollars says, “securing the border” ends at the precise moment illegal aliens get their long anticipated amnesty.
TRUST US.
Yeah right. It is already a crime to be an illegal alien in this country. The corrupt politicians in Washington have been holding border security hostage to their amnesty for over a decade now.
Our current immigration law is a disaster. Which is pretty much what you’d expect from something authored by Ted Kennedy.
We really do need to fix it. But we need to do so in a way that will not create incentives for more folks to cross the border illegally.
Why would you need to spend all that money securing the border if you’re just gonna make your illegals legal?
What Juan calls a “secure border” is not what we would call a secure border.
The politicians like Juan will stick up a few cameras and some chicken wire then they will hurry to get the amnesty passed.
You can’t trust them.
Thanks for the updater........... Loser.
Here is my plan: deport or imprison ALL illegal aliens, including their anchor babies, seal/secure the border with a wall, fence, and troops, and have a lethal response to anyone who tried to cross illegally.
The lying weasel begins the retreat from his campaign year lies. And I expect him to have a very low standard of when the border will be “secure”. Maybe when Big Sis says so.
And Sarah says she and McCain want the same things for our country, so we know where she stands too.
I swear this guy, has Dissociative identity disorder (or multiple personality disorder)
He is all over the map with his thinking....
That happens to McCain because he has to fib to the voters so much.
There also arwe radio reports that Juan said this morning that Republicans “fought the good fight” and should move on and more or less forget about repealing Obamacare.
Old Juan is ready to start “reaching across the aisle” again.
Wrong!
If they won’t enforce the borders now then we can expect them to pick and choose what parts of a comprehensive immigration law they choose to uphold.
Bottom line, they need another baby boomer generation with two working parents to pay taxes. What they’ll get is an entire generation of government entitlement sucklings.
It ain’t gonna work!
