BIG PRAIRIE Shannon Anderson had no idea what her 10-year-old neighbor wanted when he burst through the door of her mobile home Sunday evening.
Moments later, he blurted out the shocking news: He had killed his mom

in September 2007, he hit an elementary school principal with a dust pan while being escorted to a time outMaybe he needed a little more discipline than a "time out" a little earlier in his sad young life?
Sad. It’s not the video games. Not the bus driver or the principal. It’s just sad.
So, you’re Shane Hoover?
Two in the hat. Take care of the little demon now before he kills again.
When something like this happens, I always wonder what else “happened” to the child during his life. I guess I think there is more to the story than just a “kid being born bad”. Sad for the family.

Nathaniel Anderson said McVay later asked him if he should have shot his mother with the shotgun instead of the rifle.
A budding little sociopath.

“A budding little sociopath”
Yeah. I think he has passed the pulling-wings-off-of-flies stage.
No father.
They’ll put him away until he is an “adult” at 18 or 21 then let him out so he can do some real adult stuff and then he will go back into the system again.
Sadly, some people are just born insane. I had a cousin like that. His parents went nuts trying to discipline and civilize him to no avail. No matter what they did or people who tried to help did he just enjoyed causing harm and destruction. Got arrested at 14 for auto theft and drug dealing in 1965. Arrested again at 15 for drug dealing and got one year in a Calif Youth Authority camp. He even got hooked up with Charles Manson for a while. Did two adult prison sentences for armed robbery. I’m certain that he also murdered a kid who broke his jaw while in a halfway house.
A real sweetheart. Haven’t seen or heard from him in more than a decade when he told me he was trying to fake his way onto California State Disabllilty for a phony back injury. Hope I never hear from him again.
But the point is that he was bad from day one and nothing anyone did was able to effect any improvement in his behavior. It’s not very common, but it happens.
It could mean that he doesn’t understand what the gun did to his mother.
“if he should have shot his mother with the shotgun instead of the rifle. “
It would have been safer, yeah. The bullet might have gone through a window and hurt someone.
“the year before, McVays mother complained about a school bus driver disciplining her son”
BINGO!! Everyone is picking on momma’s baby
If the shotgun were loaded with birdshot she would have had a good chance of surviving.
On the other hand if the shotgun was load with 00 shot she had less chance of surviving. If the shotgun was loaded with deer slugs she had essentially no chance of surviving.
But on a humorous note I imagine the Nathaniel Anderson responding to the question with Well if you had made it to level 5 you could have picked up the sticky grenade, snuck up behind her and blown her up.
I think it is pretty clear from the article that he understood that his mother was dead and that he had done the deed.
All I can gather from the question is; that he was asking the older boy is did he use the most effective tool available.
I surmise this from his favorite games which happen to be first person shooter games that offer the player a choice of weapons which have particular effectiveness against different foes.
While ten year olds don’t often become angry, they don’t handle their angry feelings well. With parents, Ten will stomp off to his room or cry and yell in anger at the parent. With peers and siblings, Ten can be quite explosive and even violent. She will look for ways to get even with others whom she perceives to have treated her badly.
Ten approaches concepts of God, death, and morality in a matter-of-fact manner. The ten year old is not concerned about death. Most believe in God, but see church attendance as either an accepted family ritual or a disliked chore. Ten isn’t guided by his conscience as much as by what parents and teachers tell him is right or wrong. But, he wants to avoid doing wrong and has a strong concept of fairness.
