11,000 out of 14,000 “abstinant” teens had sex in the last 12 months? That’s a strange definition of abstinance.
Let's try again with some emphasis.
In Wave 3 of Add Health, about 14,000 youth agreed to provide a urine specimen to check for three STDs gonorrhea, chlamydia and trichomoniasis.More than 11,000 of these youth said they had had sexual intercourse in the last 12 months, while the remaining 3,000 youth reported no sexual intercourse during that time.
Under Bubba’s definition, they puffed but did not inhale. They just told their parents they were abstinant. The problem with many of today’s youth and parents are that they are ‘friends’ rather than having a true parent/child relationship. My upbringing was strict, but I was taught the limits and the difference between right and wrong. How we felt was really never an issue. When my parents made a ruling it was followed or punishments were doled out. Spankings were not uncommon, but during later years taking away ‘currency’ was very effective. It was up to my parents to decide what the currency was. Spending time with friends, phone time, using the car, etc were all priveleges that could be taken away very easily. The problem with kids these days is that their parents are too soft and allow the children to play one parent against the other. Society has shifted from necessities and luxuries to ‘I want it, so I have to have it’. Earning money and saving it for something you wanted or needed is a concept that is lost on society today. They do not understand what real hardship is.
