10-year-old Ohio boy was charged with murder today for allegedly shooting his mother with a .22 caliber rifle.
The youth is currently at the Richland County Juvenile detention facility and is expected to appear at a 1:30 p.m. CT hearing, according to Brad Conn, baliff for the Holmes County Juvenile Court.
Holmes County juvenile assistant prosecutor Sean Warner told ABC News that the boy has been charged with one count of murder.
"I can't divulge any statements by witness or the alleged delinquent child. But as charged it does not appear to be accident," said Warner. "There is no indication that there are any other suspects."
The prosecutor said the rural county had never seen a crime like this before.
"I'm not aware of any other similar case in this area's history," Warner said.
Holmes County Sheriff Tim Zimmerly said police were called to the tiny town of Big Prairie about 6 p.m. Sunday because the boy allegedly killed his mother, 46-year-old Deborah McVay, with a .22 caliber rifle.
The woman's body was found lying face down in the livingroom with a single shot to the head, Zimmerly said.
The boy was brought to the detention facility in Richland County early this morning. He must have a hearing within 24 hours of being detained, explained Mike Casto, court administrator for Richland County.
Authorities went to the boy's home Sunday night after a neighbor called police to say the 10-year-old told them "he needed the squad and the police and that he had just shot his mom," according to Zimmerly.

Wondering if the child was a victim of abuse by the mother?
Emotions are very powerful ... children act out ...
The gun should have had lock and been not available to him. Of course there are other ways. A blow to the head with a rock, a knife, fire, He will always be a danger to those he is near, etc.,
Very sad.
I’d like to hear the entire story, there has to be more to it than this.
unfortunately, some 10 year olds think that losing video game privileges is child abuse
> some 10 year olds think that losing video game privileges is child abuse
I’m guessing it’s gonna be something like that.
Rotten punk.
The Bible recommends the death penalty for just striking a parent.
I very highly doubt that this was done in self defense.
Probably wasn’t happy with his Christmas gifts.
Ohio Woman Deborah McVay Killed, 10-Year-Old Son Tells Neighbor He Did It, Say Police
The sheriff said McVay's 15-year-old daughter is currently staying with relatives. It is unclear whether she witnessed the shooting.
This is Amish country
Fritz said that the boy was involved in at least two cases of unruly behavior, both in school and on the school bus.
No mention of a father in the article.
I am guessing that the mother moved the family to the rural area to get the boy away from the city and friends that were bad influences.
It appears that she was too late.
Sadly, you’re not too far off. You wouldn’t believe the number of “children of divorce” who get two christmases, two birthdays, etc. etc. who have been brought up to be pitied and entitled. They all whine about their xmas gifts no matter what as they are all terribly spoiled by their parents competing to BUY their love! sick!
Yeah, Holmes county is very Amish. I lived in Millersburg for a while and worked in Wooster for a while. I worked with Amish when I worked for the logging company and got to know a number of Millers and Yoders, heh.
Wow! You went from Ohio to New Jersey?
Out of the frying pan and in to the fire.
Well I hope our new governor is as good as yours.
Thanks..
Yeah, 1996, I moved for Love and Money. I nearly doubled my salary and I'm still married so I guess it was a good tradeup.
I miss the gun laws in Ohio. I'm completely legal in NJ, but it's frustrating that there's no "path to carry". I still have and visit family in Ohio so at least I can carry there with my FL and VA permits.
I live in the mountains of Jersey in the midst of a massive population of Black bears. It really is a nice area. NJ taxes and liberals stink but once you get outside of the NYC metro area and the big cities, it's a pretty nice place to live. My taxes are pretty high but even with all the extra expenses I'm way ahead of where I would have been had I stayed back in Ohio writing code during the week and working for logger/cabinet shop the rest of the time.
