Illegal immigrants pay taxes, but do they receive but do they receive more than they give?
The Salt Lake Tribune ^ | Dec 31, 2010 | Steven Oberbeck

Whenever she can, Irma Morantes sends $100 or so to help out her mother, who still lives in Mexico.

The frequency of her gifts, though, depends on whether Morantes is working at the time and can spare the money. “If I’m not working, then my husband and I will only send money on her birthday or for a special occasion.”

She cherishes each opportunity to send money to family members back home, knowing every little bit is appreciated and can make a big difference in their lives.

Like most topics in the tempestuous debate over immigration reform, getting past the rhetoric surrounding the “remittances” immigrants send back home is important to understanding the issue, as is setting aside emotional reactions to the argument those same workers contribute little to Utah’s economy because they don’t pay taxes.

“I can certainly understand why someone would want to send money back home to family members,” said Cherilyn Eagar of the Utah Coalition on Illegal Immigration, a group that describes itself as working to address the negative impacts of illegal immigration. “But, it also can be an economic drain on a state when a large number of people are doing it.”

A number of studies over the past decade have found immigrants send from $1,000 to $3,000 a year back to their homelands. But not all immigrants are like Morantes and send money home.

They certainly take more than they pay, but it is irrelevant. They are here illegally and they need to be deported - even if they were, contrary to fact, paying more than they take.

Illegals cost the State of Colorado about $3B a year which is the amount of the Democrats shortfall.

I live in suburban Washington DC (Md.) and I noticed that a Guatemala consulate office just opened behind a warehouse building with a long line running out the door of young males who I must assume are guatemalans. What’s with that?

Nothing better than to sell a dubious cause with a nauseating anecdote. Next time they want to make a parasite look noble let them profile a tapeworm.

The article talks about illegal immigrants paying into Social Security, but neglects to mention that large numbers of illegals are also fraudulently cashing in on the federal Earned Income Tax Credit:

Off topic,

It should have been maintained and part of the Constitution that "property owners born here only" voted and governed.

Now that it is no longer the case, even foreigners are dictating policy for the country and "those who have nothing to lose" are promoting foreign dictation.

WE THE PEOPLE are becoming a minority class under the Constitution and are being honored with getting the bill to pay for it.

Lemme see. Illegals do pay taxes - if their wages aren’t under-the-table. But many of them do manage to get state-provided health care, food stamps, WIC (which doesn’t care whether you are illegal or not)... Health care for my family would cost $1500 per month, food is about $400. I don’t know of many illegals who pay $1900 per month in taxes.

It's this newspaper employee's turn to print the circulating PR bulls*** about issues. I wonder if he gets a share of the PR fees.

Fact: Remittances — Mexico's No. 2 source of foreign income after oil exports

BTW, remittances do not go just to family members.. the employees of the Mexican government here in the U.S. encourage group remittances (a kind of tax) to fund government projects in the ILLEGAL aliens' home country.

SOME Illegal immigrants MAY pay INCOME taxes, but do they receive more than they give?

The author has no idea of how many illegals pay income taxes.
And, what about the illegals that do not pay?
Are they criminals like Wesley Snipes?
If they are not, why is Snipes in jail?

The article is a pack of lies...

For the most part, these illegal aliens don't pay taxes, they buy crap at swap meets, yard sales etc...

The greedy corrupt employers that hire these millions of criminals under the table, could care less they are choking off our hospitals, health-care, jails, schools and social services...

These corrupt employers only care about their profits made off illegal low wage workers...

Profits regardless of consequences will eventually leave America dead on the floor.

We need to deport or imprison ALL illegal aliens, including their anchor babies, seal/secure the border with a wall and fence, and have a lethal response to anyone who tries to re-enter illegally.

If you look at the huge number of illegal aliens that live in TAX PAYER subsidized Section Eight housing (generally exempt from property taxes), this “argument” falls flat.

Nice try, though.

An illegal caught driving in Frisco is advised to make a call from the location and arrange for someone to drive them and their car home - no ticket. True story.

They are thought to be a major part of the service industry, of course, which is “essential” to the local economy.
