FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. (Jan. 1, 2011) — Following up on a New Year’s Eve tornado that damaged or destroyed 159 homes, the garrison commander of Fort Leonard Wood will hold a town hall meeting at 10 a.m. this morning at the Stone Gate Community Center on Fort Leonard Wood to discuss the damage and response efforts. In an internet posting issued shortly before 10 p.m. Friday night, Col. Charles Williams apologized for the “long delay in providing any update to the community” but noted that garrison staff had been focused on emergency response to the affected areas for the previous 12 hours since the EF-3 tornado hit shortly after 9 a.m. Friday.

Thanks for posting this. I tried to find something on FLW last nite late. Nothing was written in stltoday.com, which I thought was surprising but St. Louis had their own issues to deal with I suppose. We were lucky in my town (live between Rolla and St. Louis) nothing was touched. Had heavy rain and that was it.

The garrison commander apologized for a “long delay of 12 hours” to respond to questions? Heck, the current CINCUS would take that long just getting off the golf course in response to an emergency.

Has the Commander in Chief put down the golf club and snow cone to check on the damage ?
I know the answer..everyone knows the answer.
Now, if Michael Vick’s home had been destroyed by a tornado ,
Barry would have been on the phone pronto,
probably diverting Homeland Security
resources to help rebuild.
No doubt pulling Napolitano back from Afghanistan to help lead the detail.

Hello,

I work in Sunset Hills, and live in Fenton. It missed my house in Fenton by about 1/3 of a mile (with my husband and son in it) and was (according to my business neighbor)across the street (Watson Rd.). The remainder of yesterday was bizarre, sirens, helicopters, speculation on what got hit and what didn't. So much fear that there would be serious injuries or worse. Thank God, it truly was a New Year's Eve Miracle.

My prayers to all in MO and AR that were affected by this horrible storm... MOgirl

It sounds like it was devastating to some areas. It’s so odd how storms will hit various areas and not affect others.

Glad to hear you were spared.

Hello,

It would touch down, destroy what it hit, go back up and then right back down. The areas that did get hit looked like a bomb had gone off.

Our prayers were answered, at least here. What sadness for those that lost their lives and for their families...

My people got om Post briefly right after it hit. Damage was modest outside the main path. It missed the stuff I am involved in by about 1.5 miles.

I will be there Monday and give some overview without discussing mission oriented facilities.

They were fortunate that so many families were out of the housing during the Christmas vacation! Sounds like they were Johnny-on-the-Spot for getting things back in operation, as much as they could.
