Max Kellerman On CNN: “If You Eat Pork,” Don’t Complain About Michael Vick
Media ITE ^ | 12/31/2010 | Glenn Davis

Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Michael Vick continued his unlikely dominance of this week’s news cycle today, when TV pundits still found themselves with nothing better to talk about. The latest of those pundits to be brought on the air, faced with the unenviable task (especially when you don’t get enough time to do it) of voicing an opinion on this story that hasn’t been heard already: CNN’s Max Kellerman, who went on the network today to vehemently disagree with his friend Tucker Carlson’s now-infamous position on Vick…and advocate for pigs.

After saying he “would have crushed” Carlson in a debate on Vick back in the days when both worked on MSNBC (without mentioning MSNBC by name, of course), Kellerman (who also works as a sports commentator, hence being selected to comment on this “issue”) took a provocative stance on killing dogs vis-a-vis killing pigs:

“People like Tucker have this kind of an emotional reaction to harming dogs specifically because dogs were engineered for companionship – mainly because they didn’t grow large enough to be a cheap source of protein, and they don’t taste very good to us…pigs, on the other hand, do grow very large, do taste good to us, and therefore are a great cheap source of protein.” Kellerman allowed that Vick “committed a moral crime in addition to a legal crime,” but that “not nearly as many as you think” have “moral standing to point the finger at Vick.” Among those who don’t: you guessed it – those who consume pork, because they are on the “demand side” of an industry that “breeds, tortures and slaughters millions of higher life forms than dogs.”

Vick, Kellerman said, was on the “demand side” of such an industry – except, of course, that dogs are “lower life forms.” While calling pigs as a whole “higher life forms” than dogs as a whole seems an awfully broad statement (as does saying dogs, as a whole, “didn’t grow large enough to be a cheap source of protein”), he’s probably on to something in that if more meat eaters carefully considered what happens to the animals they eat…well, we might have less meat eaters.

Kellerman also dismissed the idea that it’s not a good thing for Vick to get a second chance simply because of the skills he possesses, saying that “it’s probably good” for people to see a high-profile person like Vick get another chance, and (thus far) make good. We’ll hand it to Kellerman – he made some bold, bold statements, but at this point, that’s probably what one has to do to make the Michael Vick saga the least bit interesting. I looked but could not find any redeeming qualities in any of the participants in this story.

Happy New Year FR!

Speaking of pork, I just received this email:

TEXANS CAN CONTRIBUTE A LOT
TO THIS EFFORT!

Plant a pig
Please donate to your local “Plant A Pig Foundation” today. Not tax deductible, but well worth the effort. In Spain , at Seville some local people found a way to stop the construction of another mosque in their town. They buried a pig on the site, making sure this would be known by the local press. Islamic rules forbid erecting a Mosque on “pig soiled ground”. The Muslims had to cancel the project...this land had been sold to them by government officials... No protests were needed by the local people ... and it worked!! Not dummies …. the Spaniards. They found a solution !!! No protests needed!

In Texas they have an over abundance of feral pigs. They could send them all over the country and just plant them everywhere! After all…contaminated soil would surely drift and they could create new job programs by having soil testers to determine where contaminated soil existed. Of course, high on the mountain tops of the Rockies or other mountain ranges they might find some uncontaminated soil, but then…building a mosque there would pose some problems…Americans…put on your thinking caps and let’s find a solution to this problem of a spreading menace to the American way of life! If pigs are the answer…let’s do it!
Your Committee for the Betterment of America
Let’s keep this going….send it on!

Vic seems to have been a picky eater. Sure, he softened up the dogs, and then killed them but neither he nor his guests ate them.

So, if Vick eats pork, he’s even more evil than before?

Did this subnormal idiot get a chance to see the pictures of some of those dogs that were removed from Vic’s property? If I live to be a thousand I will never forget the look in the eyes of one of those dogs with festering wounds and scars all over.

Kellerman allowed that Vick “committed a moral crime in addition to a legal crime,” but that “not nearly as many as you think” have “moral standing to point the finger at Vick.”

On this point he’s absolutely right.

A country that murders 1.3 million children a year has no moral standing to get self-righteous about Michael Vick. If the people who are upset at Michael Vick invest even 10% of their moral indignation toward Planned Parenthood, maybe there wouldn’t be 1.3 million abortions.

Sad. We don’t have to be a PETA, vegan type extremist to acknowledge that there’s inhumane treatment of food animals. I’ve always heard that pigs are very intelligent. I don’t think I could have a pet pig and continue to eat bacon.

How big are the chickens on Kellerman's home planet?

Max Kellerman is a passionate goofball with lousy judgement.

Kellerman advocated for boxer James Butler Jr. to receive minimal punishment and no criminal prosecution after sucker punching his opponent, Richard Grant in 2001. The fight was over, the decision announced and their gloves removed. Butler acted as though he was going to congratulate Grant and then hit him with an overhand right. Grant suffered a broken jaw.

Kellerman publicly argued for Butler to not receive a lifetime ban and not be criminally charged. Butler was suspended and prosecuted for aggravated assault.

In 2004 Butler murdered Max Kellerman's brother and torched his apartment to cover up the crime. Butler had been bunking at Kellerman's brother's apartment while he was trying to get his career back on track. Butler was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and arson in a plea deal.

Pork? Heck, if you eat at many Korean or Chinese restaurants don’t complain about Michael Vick.

In general, I don't diss Vick anymore, he paid his dues and his times, seems reformed, so until something else happens, I dont really care about him.

THAT SAID, there is a world of difference between sacrificing an animal for meat, relatively humanely, and doing what Vick did to those dogs, which was beyond cruel. This whole idea that you have to be a vegetarian to care about animals is a false dichotomy.

Even though I often council people against eating swine meat, only partially in jest, this piece is a silly attempt at moral equivalence.

Vick can get a second chance, it just shouldn't happen as a starter in the NFL.

It's like singer Chris Brown, the infamous woman beater, whining about people not buying his music any more.

They were claiming that dogs may have influenced mans development almost as much as man influenced dog-dom.

Certainly a symbiotic relationship. Civilization required agriculture and domesticated animals. Dogs guarded the animals, helped herd them, etc. And also helped with the hunting.
