In Kentucky, Juan Andres, the father of a U.S. Marine about to be deployed to Afghanistan, could soon be deported after being arrested earlier this month, but immigration officials are giving him the chance to ask for permanent residency. The 41-year-old father of five has been in this country for over 25 years. He is originally from Guatemala, and as a result of a kind gesture, he now faces deportation to his native Guatemala.
So while Andres son, Lance Cpl. Aspar Andres, prepares to leave for Marine boot camp then head to Afghanistan, his father begins a fight of his own.
All of Andres problems began on December 9th, when he escorted his friend to the immigration office in Louisville in order to be his translator. Upon entering, an official suspected that Andres was not in the country legally, and had him arrested.
Ron Russell, Andres immigration attorney, has begun collecting letters in support of Andres, including letters from his children, friends, and employers.
Though it is unusual for immigration officials to grant an arrested undocumented immigrant the chance to apply for a green card, Andres was granted time to get a case together. To gain legal status he has to prove he is of good moral character, has been in the country at least 10 years, and prove that deportation would cause great distress.
Russell believes Andres can easily prove the first two, and says Andres should be okay on the 3rd proof since his children are all citizens and he is the familys main money-maker.
While Andres and Russell were hoping to have more time to get everything together, they only have until the end of today (Dec. 29th) to file evidence with immigration officials.
If he is GOING to boot camp he’s not yet a Marine.
If you are an illegal you could be trafficking heroin and have, at the time Denver DA Bill Ritter, allow you to plea bargain down to agricultural trespass and avoid jail time and deportation.
How is his kid a Marine if he hasn’t even went to Parris Island yet? He has never even served on active duty. All he did was go to the recruiting station and sign up. At the MEP station, I assume he took his initial Oath of Enlistment, but does that make him a Marine?
He hasn’t even started boot camp, sheesh.
And chances are good he won’t finish it.
So it’s a non-story.
No, they began 25 years ago when he decided to enter the country illegally
He should be deported, No question.
As a former active duty Marine, what does this mean for me and my former Marine buddies?
Can we flout the laws of this country and get a pass?
Let me know, cause there are a boatload of laws that I can’t wait to violate!
Payment of taxes is right at the top of the list!
when the article says ‘all his children’ it doesn’t mention whether there are 2...5...10...??
I definately hope that he does well in the Marines and serves with honor. I think that this article is getting ahead of themselves calling this recruit a Marine. I remember when I signed up for the Navy, we were not allowed to call ourselves sailors until we “Passed and Reviewed”. I do not know how it is in other branches. I imagine it is similar.
....something tells me his kid decided to sign up with the Marines on DEC,10th........
So let’s have a country who’s politicians AND military are on the side of non-Americans.
Last I heard, ILLEGAL means ILLEGAL!
Immigrate legally and these problems are much less likely to occur.
YA, I had one of those WTFs? Lance and hasn’t finished boot? My, how things have changed.....
How did his kids become citizens? Just a BC? Gotta change that anchor baby law.
“The 41-year-old father of five has been in this country for over 25 years”
If he tried to come here legally in the first place he would have his green card or U.S. citizenship by now. In addition to being illegal, he is stupid. I heard that the waiting list to get here legally is about 10 years. He should be allowed back in about 90 years.
Not only hasn’t gone to boot camp, he is already on his way to Afghanistan!
If you somehow get passed this obstacle, Boot Camp takes a while. Deployment is not imminentn, nor even inevitable. By the time he gets through advanced training, One Big Azz Mistake America will have surrendered.
DEPORT THE SOB
BFD
He’s illegal
Deport him.
