Marshal: Deputy who killed dog remorseful, but had to defend himself
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ^ | December 30, 2010 | Larry Hartstein

Fulton County Marshal Antonio Johnson said Thursday the deputy who shot and killed a couple's lab mix while trying to serve a lawsuit is "very remorseful" about the "very unfortunate situation," but felt he was defending himself."From talking to him, he didn't have any other choice because the dog was charging at him," Johnson told the AJC. "The dog was unattended, unleashed, in an open gravel field."

Johnson said he was still going over the report and would not identify the deputy until later Thursday. He said the incident is under investigation and the owners are free to file a complaint.

The deputy went to 439 Edgewood Ave. in Atlanta to serve a lawsuit to someone listed in unit 103, Johnson said.

"The dog came out of nowhere, aggressively," Johnson said. "He tried to step back, but the dog kept charging him. He fired two fatal shots.

I understand it as well, but again, if the police can’t defend themselves from stray dogs without shooting them, what do the police expect normal people to do? I don’t see the police saying we should all go buy guns to shoot stray dogs, but if we are supposed to run away and call the police, why can’t the police run away and get someone to handle it without killing the dog?

My wife asked a local sheriff's deputy about that. He said, 'you gotta do what you gotta do' to protect yourself.

End of discussion huh?

Do you mind if I ping you next time a cop shoots a small dog in a fenced in yard?

“end of discussion”...lol..you’re funny. Not bright, but funny.

I do not care if it is a dog, cat, bear, deer or squirel...if I am armed, i am putting it down.

You sound upset.

Have you ever thought about changing your screen name to "joe fonebonehead?"

Oh and by the way. If as you say, “a dog, cat, bear, deer or squirel” comes “charging at you” and you take your gun and “put it down” you better be ready for charges as firing a weapon in most every city in the country is against the law. Now I'm sure you can claim it was self defense but good luck in front of the judge claiming you were afraid the squirrel you mentioned was about to attack.

My Dad was a Deputy for 27 years. SOP was to mace the dog, not shoot it.

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but LEO these days get a choice of being certified for mace/pepper or tazer, but very few do both.

If you know anyone in the LEO community, you should know there is a dog-killing culture that has existed for many years. Some of them just get off on it. Plus, it's far less paperwork than shooting a person. There is a significant number of “good” cops who don't participate, but conveniently look the other way.

Police kill pit bull after pepper spray fails
Thursday, December 28, 2006
Pittsburgh Post-Gazette
Pittsburgh police early yesterday shot and killed a dog after they said it shook off an entire canister of pepper spray and the impact of several bricks hurled at it to get it to move away from a house.

Just before midnight on Tuesday, Officer James Goga responded to a call from a woman who lives at a house in the 1000 block of Steuben Street who said a “large pit bull” was sitting on a chair, growling and barking, next to her front door.

The 57-year-old woman said she couldn’t get past the dog to get into her house, and police said it would growl and bark at anyone who came near, refusing to move.

“The contents of one can of pepper spray was deployed on the dog,” Officer Goga reported. “This was ineffective and only caused the dog to lick its face.”

The impact of two bricks only caused the dog to growl some more.

Shortly after midnight, a special deployment unit arrived to try to remove the dog, but when officers moved in it jumped up and came at them aggressively.

Officer Goga then shot it in the chest, killing it.

Police hadn’t determined who owns the dog.

A freaking labrador? He shot a labrador? I’ve never seen nor heard of a vicious lab.....and I used to work in an Animal Shelter.

There is either a detail missing, or the officer put a dog down that was as much threat as a Chihuahua.

A 40 lb Lab, Terrier mix. Sounds like a real hell hound to me.

Terrier. That could be a pit bull.

Jimbo: You see boys, the Democrats have passed a lot of laws trying to stop us from hunting.

Cartman: Democrats piss me off!

Jimbo: They say we can't shoot certain animals anymore, unless they're posing an immediate threat. Therefore, before we shoot somethin', we have to say 'It's coming right for us.'

I think what they did was in the right order.

Pepper spray it first.

If it doesn’t work and it becomes a threat, then elevate the force.

The officer in the current story just blew it away, right away.

And you don’t have to be a dog expert to know a golden retriever is not a pit bull.

Sometimes you just don't have the time. I had a dog come out of nowhere at me and there weren't no time to elevate the threat if choice (1) didn't work.

One. It wasn't a golden retriever, it was a lab-terrier mix.

Two. "terrier' is most likely "pit-bull".

Though certainly not a Golden, she didn’t look like a viscous dog to me.

Of course. The mouth was closed in that photo.

This dog would look sweet also, only if the mouth were closed.

If you have an issue with the dog in the story, maybe a hamster is more your speed. Cowardice is a terrible thing.

shooting an animal controlled in it’s yard is not acceptable. This animal was not controlled in it’s yard. Legit shoot.
