Polls Push GOP To Call 'Truce' On Social Issues
IBD Editorials ^ | December 29, 2010 | MICHAEL BARONE

Back in June, Indiana Gov. Mitch Daniels, who many think would be an attractive 2012 presidential candidate, was quoted by Andrew Ferguson in the Weekly Standard as saying the next president "would have to call a truce on the so-called social issues."

That quickly attracted some harsh criticism from opponents of abortion and same-sex marriage. But Daniels has declined to back down, telling the Indianapolis Star the other day that such issues are secondary to the economy and foreign policy.

I think both Daniels and his critics have missed the point.

The fact is that there is an ongoing truce on the social issues, because for most Americans they have been overshadowed by concerns raised by the weak economy and the Barack Obama Democrats' vast increase in the size and scope of government.

Those with strong positions on both sides of the abortion and gay rights issues don't like to hear that.

They — on both sides — base their views on strongly held moral beliefs that are intellectually defensible and not vicious in character.

And for more than a decade, they had gotten used to a politics in which the demographic variable most highly correlated with voting behavior was religion, or degree of religiosity, and in which positions on abortion were very highly correlated with partisan preference.

Liberals have moral issues? ROFL!

Sorry Michael Barone - but they have excelled in destroying the moral foundations of this country like termites destroy the foundations of a home.

The culture wars will never end because the Left wants to remake America. And we’ve been on the losing end of them the past few years.

Truce?

More like surrender.

Do we have any real leaders anymore?

Michael Barone is like so many so-called conservative pundits: he has been inside the Beltway for too long.

Democrats have declared war on social issues and Republicans have responded by declaring surrender.

The GOP would then lose my vote and destroy and conservative movement.

There is no such thing as ‘social issues’. You either are a conservative or you are not.

Mitch Daniels is losing any chance he has in running with conservative support if he holds this as true.

Yup... and I got zotted here for advocating the reinstatement of the ban on gays serving in the military.

Oh why in the world don’t people take their anger out on the turncoats in our party?

I haven’t abandoned my principles. I told JimRob that DADT is a perfect illustration of where conservatives have gone wrong for 17 years. Compromising on our principles will never be good enough for the Left.

Like I said, let’s go back to the way it used to be or move on. I prefer the former. Who wants to follow me?

I don’t think it’s a sustained ‘truce’. At this moment, economic trouble is the common enemy that voters of all political stripes have that in mind (not necessarily means the politicians feel the same). Once the economy shows a hint of recovery, we’ll see the cultural war start again.

TRANSLATION: We ont he left MANUFACTURE the opinion that social issues do not matter once we have made gains that the country does not want. Therefore we DEMAND that you not pay attention to repaling any of those things we have acheived. Its all part of our war against Christianity and the America that is...we hate it.

Polls Push GOP To Call 'Truce' On Social Issues

Who wrote that title? It sure wasn't Michael Barone. The article is perfectly reasonable, but it does not document any such "push."

If the GOP abandons the unborn I will not vote for the GOP. I will not sell my birthright for a mess of pottage.

This is moronic. It not only shows a complete lack of principles and morality, but it is a surefire way to anger the base and lose elections.

If the GOP abandons social issues, how can the GOP expect to compete for the vote of say, a minimum wage pro-life waitress who has no health insurance? Well, we can still promise her that we will protect her from the death tax in the event she should purchase a hundred million dollar winning lottery ticket.

Without a strong, clear and outspoken commitment to issues like family, life and marriage, the GOP will be forced to move way to the left on economic issues just to compete for votes.

Ping and double ping. Equivalent to the 70’s mantra: “Better Red than Dead”.

It’s the “electability” argument. Vote for some one deemed “electable” no matter that that could be the same as voting for a demrat. People espousing this argument are actively dissembling and/or are demrat controlled RINOs.

It is our job to reeducate the useful idiots so our conservative candidates are electable. What is amusing is the RINO crowd and the demrat media enablers seem to have totally erased in their minds the results of the last mid-terms.

They are doing what Marxists always do when under pressure—pretend what is happening is not happening.
