AK Steel announced Tuesday it plans to close its Ashland, Ky., coke plant permanently in 2011, a decision that will affect its 263 employees.
Procedures for the closure will begin immediately and be completed early in the second quarter of 2011, according to a press release from the company.
------------------------------------------------------
Ray Finley, 54, of South Point, has been a contracted employee at the plant for the past three years. Finley blamed the Obama Administration and the Environmental Protection Agency for the closure.
Its sad that the federal government is going to let the American people starve, while jobs go to China, he said.
The company said increased maintenance and increasingly stringent environmental regulations have made the plant, which produces the black furnace fuel for the companys iron- and steelmaking facility, not cost competitive.

USS ain’t no dummies, they most likely saw the writing on the wall!
You forgot through Mexico...
Recall he said that he was going to reshape America? And the sheep shouted hoorah!clapped their hands and danced in the streets. The dancing in the streets part I know because I saw it on television on election night. I understant that those who were doing the dancing had never held a job in their lives, and never will. But , when there is no one working for the government to steal their wages from and give to them, how high will they be dancing then?
And the best[worse] is yet to come.
Hmmmm ... does this mean that the death of cap and trade is a foregone conclusion? The company must think so because think of the value of this facility if C&T should pass ... closing it would mean a zillion credits, no?
I am not him , but I can tell you that no, they will not blame themselves. They will blame President Bush and the Republican Party. Or anyone and everything but themselves.
All too soon now the seeds that they so joyfully sowed that
November day will be ready for reaping. And the harvest will be both bitter and boundiful.
And how did he vote in the Lame Duck session?
“Its just the beginning, the EPA is bound and determined to shut down the industrial output of the nation.”
They’re not going to be happy until this place is one big National Park. Closed to the Public on top of it.
I knew a liberal feel-good family who lost their jobs, house and cars since obama’s election. I had to listen to a lot of $hit from these people so I am not real sympathic to their plight since their idiocy has placed me and mine in harm’s way.
I think there will come a day when all essential manufacturing will be done by the government. Until he retired, my relative was an engineer for the NYS DEC. He said that the government is the worst polluter, by far. And there is never a price to pay because it is a big bureaucratic machine.
I don’t know but I do know that as Governor of WV he was a proponent of Cap & Trade. The people of WV had to know that when they elected him. With the EPAâs current direction every coal mine in WV will be shut down in ten years or less.
Maybe for now. The One and his overlords have decided that EPA action was more expedient. That is bad enough, but unfortunately it is worse. The rest of the federal government is involved (DoE, etc) extorting carbon reparations from politically incorrect industry in favor of China and politically connected industries.
USS was one of my major customers via their steamships. You could go out of your way to provide a great deal and they were always trying to put the screws to the supplier.
of course, they learned from one of the great master screwers; Georege Steinbrenner...
