Coming soon to a grocery store near you: Those nutrition labels slapped on everything from cereal to soda pop will soon be required on packages of meat.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced Wednesday morning that the new rule, slated to start Jan. 1 of 2012, requires that 40 of the most common cuts of poultry, pork, beef and lamb include labels that disclose to consumers the total number of calories, the number of calories from fat and the total grams of fat and saturated fat.
...The rule will apply to whole cuts of meat and poultry, including boneless chicken breast, tenderloin steak, and ground or chopped meat such as hamburger or turkey, said officials for USDAs Food Safety and Inspection Service.

If it’s not spilling out both sides of the rind, I don’t buy it....
And the line about cigarettes, be sure to really inhale, get the smoke deep into your lungs.
What’s so sick about this crap is that the state of Alabama was so concerned that much of the IMPORTED FISH coming into the state was tainted because fedzilla was testing less than 2% of the imports. They set up their own testing lab and are REJECTING ABOUT 50% of the imported fish due to CONTAMINATION. (Surprise: Most of it comes from ASIA!!!!
You suppose fedzilla would devote more resources to keeping citizens safe from THAT? But NOOOOO. They do chit like this instead.
God help us all.
“the number of calories from fat and the total grams of fat and saturated fat.”
Would like to see that label slapped on all the fatsos in the federal bureaucracy. Those fat boys and girls are one stair climb away from strokes and heart attacks.
Not one more regulation until the Federal Government provides labeling which describes how much pork is in every bill.
We’re in bad shape, Dick, I’m tellin’ ya.
Someday, there will be nothing to choose from but tofu, quinoa, soymilk, sprouts and WORSE at the grocery store.
In other bad news, Frito-Lay, yes the originators of FRITOS (my favorite chip) have announced they are changing all their products to ALL NATURAL ingredients. They are having a problem with the taste tests, however....
I’m vegan, no sodium, no caffeine, for health reasons. Nutrition labels have been very helpful to me. For example, the difference between Shredded Wheat and Shreddies is that the latter has been loaded with sugar and salt. Did you know that all seafood contains cholesterol? Hardly anyone reads the nutrition labels, but for those few who do, they should be there. For a free marketer like me, government should be restricted to defense, police, weights and measures and ... nutrition labels ... and few other things.
> Did you know that all seafood contains cholesterol?
Gee, and you figured all that out without a multi billion dollar agency slapping a label on it. - Seriously, that thinking is part of the problem in this country.
My God, did you know that there is cholesterol in eggs? My God!
Yes, but did you know there is "good" cholesterol as well as "bad" cholesterol, and when cholesterol is found in nature -- as in egg yolks -- both are found therein, as well as substances such as lecithin which help to break down the cholesterol.
WTH anyone listens to the government that constantly lies to us us beyond me.

LDL and HDL are lipoproteins which transport cholesterol. There is no "good" or "bad" cholesterol.
When you reduce your consumption of cholesterol, the liver makes up for some of that reduction with the production of endogenous cholesterol. In most cases, removing cholesterol entirely from your diet will only reduce your total cholesterol by 5% to 10%. In my case, it took my LDL from the low 300s mg/dl to the 190s. Everyone's liver behaves differently.
Have a deep-fried bacon burger w/ side of battered deep-fried healthy green beans.
Looks like a well rounded meal to me. All the food groups appear to be represented:
Meat
Veggies
Grains
Dairy
What was the last group? Anyway...looks mighty fine. Should fix a truck full and then take them to a public school. Probably would swear out a warrant for the driver though.
I don’t think they’ve done heard of this Internet thing that’s all the rage right now. Why, I bet this nutritional information is bound to be out there somewhere!
Golly-—I am so impressed with your knowledge of nutrition.
Let me know when you apply for the job as public school nutritionist-—I’d be glad to give you a letter of recomendation (/snix).
“The government is best which governs least.¨ —Thomas Jefferson (or maybe Thomas Paine.)
Insanity. Since every cut will weigh a little differently, each cut will need a custom label. This is a bald-faced attempt to make meat too expensive to buy.
Unless the ranchers, packing plants and consumers fight back! Notice how the public was notified of this new regulation a whole 3 days in advance! I wonder how much notice the industry had!! The libs are running a fascist dictatorship and have been for some time now...
