The commentary about President Obama's call to the owner of the Philadelphia Eagles regarding that adjudicated dog killer Michael Vick has now reached an apogee of stupidity that strongly suggest that too many otherwise smart people have lost their ability to reason. Obama, Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie recounted, said, "'So many people who serve time never get a fair second chance.' He said, 'It's never a level playing field for prisoners when they get out of jail.' And he was happy that we did something on such a national stage that showed our faith in giving someone a second chance after such a major downfall." It helps, I think, that Vick has completed 63.2 percent of his passes and has 20 touchdowns. He is not your average felon.

Dog fighting was Vick's hobby. He had been warned about it. His own father had told him to stop. He persisted because, as with many great athletes, he was never held accountable. A nation of jock-sniffers always looks away when a great athlete does something wrong. Nothing is an important as winning -- we all know that -- and Vick was and is a winner.

Now Vick has punched all the tickets on the road to rehabilitation. He is contrite. He loves pooches. He might even get a dog himself. How much of this is genuine and how much is synthetic I leave to you. But I'll tell you this. Vick got a second chance not because he deserves it but because he can play football. This is the lesson we can all take from this sorry episode. It's one thing to be sorry. It's much better to hit your man in the end zone.

I watched the game last night, too. Looked to me like Vick-the-dog-killer got beaten up pretty good! I don’t think he will be able to play much longer-—
Its despicable how many Americans idolize sport players imho.

Yeah, it’s absolutely freaking amazing what small brains are in the heads of most people. Must be some DNA left over from those attendees and participants in the Roman coliseum (now there was a blood-thirsty bunch)!
Well we do know that he cried and apolgized to the Eagles' coach and others for failing them after they gave him a chance. How many chances do you give the guy? Eight, Nine, Ten ...
Imagine how bad it would have been if the refs had called even a fraction of the Eagles' holds.
I'd be happy to see a video of him being torn apart by a rabid pit bull.
If Michael Vick was your average illiterate thug from any number of America's urban rat-holes, he never would have gotten this "second chance."
And the way to show the children is to make heros of evil people?
That’s a brilliant insight on your part.
Of course, he’s worth watching and I’ve enjoyed his games because he is good.
You wanna hold this charge against him forever.
Heck, we release all kinds of criminals on parole who’ve committed worse crimes. Against humans, no less.
Vick should never have been returned to the NFL.
But it is ok for the Eagles' coach and others in the NFL to call Vick a 'very nice person' ....
Hell....I don't want people looking up to Obama either.
Neither do I think people should look up to Koby Bryant, Miley Cyrus, Lady Gaga, Brad Pitt, et al.....
So...once again, how do YOU plan to ensure this?
It wasn’t because he’s a “jock”; it’s because he’s black. Why can’t we just SAY it?
Some FReepers want/wanted that!
Is the fact that Michael Vick is African America have anything to do with this hand up from the President and the media? Promoting African American QB’s seems to be rooted in the sport, from college on up.
You decide!
You miss the whole point. It is not a single 'charge'. It is about his character. His character as shown by his actions prior to, during and after his dog-fighing episodes.
I’ll take their word for it, he probably is, I see no reason to doubt their assessment.
All in all, I don’t care about their opinion about his social skills.
He plays ball. Rather well, too.
I couldn’t care less about his off gridiron personality.
One way is to counter every 'Vick is really a nice person' with the truth.
You probably would not say that if you were to ever get on his bad side.
Rose committed a crime against the game and deserves his lifetime ban.
I'm just guessing you called hundreds of thousands of Conservatives...idiots.
But it's expected from you.
