New House Members Wake Up to Redistricting
By RAYMOND HERNANDEZ
Published: December 28, 2010
WASHINGTON Representative Peter T. King, a 17-year veteran of Congress, recently invited the newly elected members of the New York delegation to his office to offer them a little advice.
Mr. King, a Republican from Long Island, talked to them about the importance of sticking together and about difficult votes ahead.
But then he turned to a subject that the rookies in the room had thought little about: redistricting. In a few weeks, lawmakers in Albany will begin talks on how to redraw New Yorks Congressional map and eliminate two districts.
It was clear that these fresh-faced politicians were not prepared for what may be the ultimate insiders game.
I told them to get ready, Mr. King said, recalling the meeting. That process turns friend against friend.

Good. Now draw up a map or three and have a vote.
In other news, Nevada is to gain one seat.
Too bad it will be another small district entirely drawn within the liberal bastion of Clark County (Las Vegas/Henderson).
I really see no advantage is creating another liberal congressional seat our state.
>> “That process turns friend against friend.”
McCain taught me everything I need to know about the meaning of “my friend” in politics.
Even “better”, some will suggest to eliminate one or two of the seats held by the new faces.
Just watch.
NY, the place that brought you Tammany Hall and Boss Tweed.
higgins and slaughter are the same, the area will get screwed by either one and they deserve it
Has USCB actually released any sub-state level data? County estimates (even county subdivision estimates are available for 2009) — however those are just estimates. They didn’t have Missouri losing a seat, and New York losing two — TX was at +3 instead of +4; FL was at +1 instead of +2.
Also many CD’s split county subdivisions.
According to the estimates, Clark County, NV didn’t have quite enough for 3 seats.
It doesn’t look to me like sub-state level data will be available until April 2011.

Maybe there are outside cooperators with access to the data that have spilled the beans? That could be a criminal offense.
I voted against Louise M. Slaughter in the last election. The Dems are in charge of the redistricting, Slaughter’s district is thin and very long (I’d bet 60 to 70 miles long) and winds around like a snake. The districts in New York State are in dire need of new boundaries that make sense.
Thanks for posting the map showing this egregious Dem gerrymandering. The vast majority of Western New Yorkers are conservative and Ms. Slaughter does NOT represent our interests or values. Only by unconscionably connecting the inner cities of Buffalo and Rochester has she been able to retain power. PLEASE if there is one act of redistricting that needs to be done - THIS IS THE ONE!
Won't the new Republican governor have some input into how the lines are drawn?
By my understanding of the process, not much.
Based on population, and a very disproportionate percentage of our population is in the Vegas/Henderson area.
I could go into a long rant on this.
Suffice it to say that Pinky Reid has twisted the normal population growth patterns to favor his liberal base in Clark County for many years.
Incidentally you guys have it completely backwards.
That 28th wasn’t drawn to favor Slaughter; it was drawn to help nearby Republican Tom Reynolds by pulling Democrats out of his district.
The New York map in 2000 was drawn to help Republicans for the most part.
I might add that a lot of those Western New Yorkers voted for Obama and Democrats in 2008. They did return to form in 2010, but either way, Rochester/Syracuse/Buffalo are pretty leftist areas now.
Yeah but there’s really no way to avoid creating a new leftist seat.
