I don't think it's credible to suggest that unregulated global fishing isn't taking a heavy toll on the world's sea life. However, I do think that U.S. fisherman are generally among the most responsible and understand the need to preserve the resource from which they make their living.

If that's true, then realizing those economies of scale will create real efficiency gains that will benefit seafood consumers.

Since when did filling out government paperwork benefit consumers?

Gad.

Nothing is stopping mom and pop from forming an LLC, giving them the exact same liability limits as any large corporation.

Equine feces. There is a reason the 14th Amendment was ratified and it wasn't about slavery, yet.

If that's true, then the solution is to stop the regulatory mess, not to prevent big corporations from buying catch shares.

Good, start there and we'll talk. Until then, no dice.

LOL. Fishing oligopoly? You've got to be kidding. Commercial fishing is one of the least concentrated industries around, even if you ignore all the mom and pop operations.

Which is why we are seeing this, that is, if you'd get your thumbs out of your eyes.

ABOLISH THE EPA as we know it and that will end the problems. Each State can govern its own coastal districts.

Take a look at all of teh lawsuits filed by these environmental groups, they are designed to decrease food production or energy production. Teh quesiton is why, who is behind that, is it an attempt to destroy the United States. Earthjustice has a website of their lawsuits (over a hundred at any given time) against the United States and her people. Every thing from more wolves (to eat more livestock and game animals), protect brucellosis in buffalo and allow them to roam in ranch country (causing the cattle herds that become infected to be destroyed), to slowing oil/gas/coal production is on that list.
I m not sure what their ultimate goal is and whether they are dupes of powers we are unaware of or what, but they are destroying our country.

Magnuson-Stevens
Fishery Conservation and Management Act

Public Law 94-265

As amended through October 11, 1996

http://www.nmfs.noaa.gov/sfa/magact/mag1.html#s2

The authority...TAQs and TACs were around and law in most fisheries long before this administration. The GOP has aided and abetted...as usual.

"Last month, Schwaab’s announcement of NOAA intentions to expand catch shares into the recreational sector drew howls."

The only reason that you are reading about this now.

For the most part the recreational sector worked with the Guv. to screw the commercial fisherman. They loved quotas and boundaries for us longliners as long as it was not their ox being gored.
