Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano says people should "be fair" to Director of National Intelligence James Clapper after he revealed in an interview last week that he was unaware of a string of terror arrests that happened in Britain hours prior.

Clapper had been working on Capitol Hill on issues involving START and North Korea and went into the interview before his briefer had a chance to relay the information, Napolitano told CNN Sunday.

This struck me as absurd when I heard her say it. The man is Director of National Intelligence. He should have been briefed before exposing himself to a televised interview. He should have insisted on it.

Yeah, well, it is hard to even seem to be competent when you are not.

I heard Clapper was a little crabby after this incident...

If he was so damn busy working on urgent security issues, why was he doing a TV interview?

BTW, I would hardly share Napalitano’s assertion that the START treaty was an urgent matter. They were working to self-imposed deadlines based on political issues and the timing of Obama’s vacation.

Of course, absolutely, but you're making way too much sense. Meanwhile, the average politically aware shmo knows more than the Director of National Intelligence. National Intelligence, now there's an oxymoron for you!

There are all kinds of ways to destroy Napolitano’s response. The whole scenario is absurd. The entire ensemble of players are absurd morons.

If Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano believes that Director of National Intelligence James Clapper shouldn't be relieved for cause "after he revealed in an interview last week that he was unaware of a string of terror arrests that happened in Britain hours prior" than she can resign right along with him.

Why Republican Congressmen aren't demanding that both of them resign is beyond me.

Anything she spews to cover up this incompetence and the seriousness of this lack of security goes nowhere.

Resign because Republicans demand it? The DNI serves at the pleasure of the President. This is why the liberal press is downplaying this embarrassment: they don’t want it to be another indicator of Obama’s incompetency.

I think that's a great point. Thanks for making it.

She wasn’t so hot herself.
The other guy, Bremmer?, answered several questions for her.
Clapper looked like he was in a trance.

Forget being briefed before doing a public interview. He’s the DIRECTOR OF NATIONAL INTELLIGENCE. It should be his JOB to be immediately briefed when major terror operations are detected, so he can make sure the relevant agencies and subgroups are looking for the same type of attack here.

When a reporter (and frankly, most of the tuned-in people in the country) know about a major intelligence issue before the Director of National Intelligence, it indicates that the administration is royally screwed up.

We agree on that. What I was saying was that this shows the level of screwed up the administration is. Sure, he should have been briefed immediately. But, the fact he wasn’t, and the fact he didn’t insist on it before appearing in public to answer questions, tells volumes about this administration.

And then, for the DHS to come on with so lame a defense is reprehensible.
