Departing Republican-turned-Democratic Sen. Arlen Specter on Tuesday said conservative Republicans who backed Tea Party challengers against establishment candidates in the recent elections engaged in political cannibalism.
In his final floor speech, Specter complained there's scant room for centrists like himself in a polarized Senate where civility is in short supply.
"In some quarters, compromise has become a dirty word," said Pennsylvania's longest-serving senator, who lost his re-election bid after three decades in the Senate.
Specter complained that some GOP senators had helped Tea Party challengers beat incumbent Republicans like Utah Sen. Bob Bennett and Rep. Mike Castle in his Delaware Senate primary.
"Eating or defeating your own is a form of sophisticated cannibalism," he said.

AMF, Arlen
Snarl On!
“In his final floor speech, Specter complained there’s scant room for centrists like himself...”
Nuff said.
I expect to hear the roar of approval from the left for Spector—”you go girl! you tell ‘em!” at the same time they continue to applaud their hero Alan Grayson for STTP. That’s the way the left rolls.
Maybe I’m asking a stupid question, but if he’s a democrat now, why does he care what goes on in republican primaries?
He forgot.
“Centrist”,oh, is that what he calls it when a politician switches sides THREE times out of blatant opportunism? Is this Bill Clinton-speak?
And of course he is right. The point he misses, however, was that it was never about "eating our own" but expelling those who pretended to be our own.
With cannibalism and all it was actually Joe Sestak who retired him.
Suck it up buttercup.
Say hi to Tom Daschle for us.
Specter ... don’t let the door hit ya where the good Lord split ya on the way out!
A centrist is a liberal who hasn’t yet been bought off by George Soros.
Hey Arlen, the Dems didn’t want you either. Nobody likes a backstabber. Just leave.....and have a few more of those sour grapes on your way out the door.
The sweetest goodbyes are those made to whining cry-baby RINOs, who actually think they are entitled to kick their party around and still get re-elected.
"What's that Arlen baby? Afraid you're gonna lose? Trust me, Arlen, old pal.
About as much chance as that happening as Michele having a watermelon-eating
contest on the WH lawn."
We're not eating our own if we're voting out the garbage, trash and scum that doesn't represent our own best self-interests.
As far as I am concerned he won’t be missed.
