I think the ironic celebration of the holidays in the form of gaudy Christmas sweaters is kind of lame. But one Virginia high schools punishment of a group that called themselves the Christmas Sweater Club just seems ridiculous, even by oversensitive public school standards.
Ten students at Battlefield High School in Manassas, Virginia faced detention and other punishment as a result of their involvement in the Christmas Sweater Club.
One of the students involved told WUSA that the school said they were maliciously wounding other kids.
The Club believes that the accusation stems from them throwing candy canes to other students at the halls.
Another club member told WUSA that an administrator told him that the candy canes could be used as weapons by sucking on them and making them have sharp points. The student said that no one had done that [ED. NOTE: Presumably because this isn't "OZ" and most high school aged kids tend not to need to shiv someone in the cafeteria].
When reached for comment, school principal Amy Etheridge-Conti said they did more than hand out candy and cheer, but she refused to comment specifically on the matter.
So in summary, no one involved seems to know what they did wrong. And it couldnt be THAT serious, i.e. they didnt viciously sodomize freshman boys in the locker room while wearing Christmas sweaters, since they only got detention and clean-up duty. Unless sodomizing freshman boys is so common at this high school that its now a slap on the wrist punishment. Hmm. Whats your deal, Battlefield High School?
How do you do?
My name ain’t Sue....
I did not attend, but was told about the recent concert at our local high school. This is the last winter concert for this teacher- he is retiring. There was a wide assortment of carols, religious and all. The student that was telling me said with a grin they figured his thinking was what can they do to him anyway. He is retiring.
Many times, ZERO Tolerance = No Brains!
I’m going to give myself a cookie! I so rarely beat anyone to the punch! :)
Oh, and don’t forget to get a pic and post it! :)
LOL
Guaranteed the very same school is singing Kwanza and Chaunnaka (or however you spell it) songs at their “holiday” concert.
The students weren't punished for wearing Christmas sweaters, get a grip.

Message from Principal, Mrs. Ethridge-Conti
To Our Battlefield Community:
On December 20, there was a TV news report about an incident which occurred on Monday, December 13 that has generated much misinformation and extremely negative emails and phone calls to the school. The school administration is prohibited from discussing student discipline cases in order to protect student privacy. However, certain facts not related to student discipline need to be clarified. Please know that students are allowed to dress up for the holidays, celebrate accordingly, distribute candy, and sing.
As with all schools, there are rules in place for our students to discourage behavior that could get out of control, become unsafe, or result in creating a mess on school property. This is especially true in an environment where literally thousands of students are confined in a narrow space. Students are not discouraged from participating in activities related to the holidays as long as it does not cause any disruptions. These are very reasonable rules and are applied equitably to all students. What started out as an event that was acceptable got to the point where it caused a disruption, one that was reported by students and staff. It should be noted many students have dressed up for the holidays, attended our school holiday concerts, and distributed candy without any problems resulting.
As always, we appreciate your continued support and again wish you all a happy holiday season!
Mrs. Amy S. Ethridge-Conti
