George Skelton has an interesting column today, Whitman paid a high price for Latino distrust of GOP . Writes Skelton,
"Senior advisor Rob Stutzman isn't exactly spilling his guts about the former EBay chief's spectacular thumping. The billionaire lost to low-budget Jerry Brown by 54% to 41%, despite spending a record $160 million-plus, roughly $142 million of it her own money.
"But the veteran Republican strategist is blaming the mini-landslide size of Whitman's loss on some ugly dust-ups over illegal immigration that alienated Latinos from the GOP."
Bunk.
Let's start with the biggest factor in Whitman's Titanic disaster of a campaign -- the overpaid political class coronated her because of her money, even though they had no reason to believe that she would be a good candidate or a great governor.
I agree that the GOP has to woo Latino voters, and has to develop a message that resonates with the Latino community. But the party cannot win Latino votes by pandering....

Diaz had nothing to do with Whitman's loss by 13 points.
Whitman lost because she was broadly seen to be totally without principle.
She would say or do anything to anyone to get elected and had no basis from which to govern.
She might have done better had she concentrated on wooing e-e-e-evil White males rather than Mexican nationals here illegally.
Moonbeam ran an “austere” campaign with about 150 million dollars of union money. Whitman never had a chance.
And the illegal is still in-country, and still not in jail...
exactly and lets not forget the slanted leftist crap peddled on every local news network ( including FOX). These local media leftists HIDE Moonbeams last awful regime from the public and played the class envy card non stop !
we are moving from CA to the south on Xmas eve day .
my wife wants out NOW and can not wait another day.
Besides every single Republican running for state wide office lostnot just Meg.
With the largest population of any state by a wide margin, we could hope so, but why mention such a bizarre claim.
By the way, do you have the source and numbers for that claim?
“California has more conservatives than any other state.”
You’re *probably* right.
But we have this situation where the legislature will vote in items like AB32 and will work to defeat Prop 13, and the state has largely surrendered its industrial future to CARB. So, while Conservatives in CA can get together and either drink martinis or hold up protest signs, the business and commerce environment will undoubtedly be shaped by the liberal majority. And the welfare class will continue to drain the system as is their wont and as a result, fees such as worker’s comp and endless agency and administrative regulation will also become imposed upon any prospective CA business.
So if you’re getting my drift, for me it’s not just a matter of a popularity party or feeling weird because of all the 0bama/Biden bumper stickers stuck on all the cars. It’s a matter of luddites attempting to rejuvenate what was formerly a vast industrial base which furnshed jobs and commerce and all manner of ancillary productive activity. It would be like leeches trying to carry out a blood transfusion on a sick patient. I honestly do not see how this setup can work.
Meg Whitman (3.6 million) got more votes than Rick Perry (2.7 million) on Nov. 2.
My claim is NOT bizarre; it is true.
The reason the claim is bizarre, is because who says things like that?
California is clearly a liberal state by an overwhelming margin, yet because it has 37 million people, you say things like ‘it has more conservatives than any other state’?
Massachusetts has more conservatives than conservative enclaves like North Dakota, Wyoming, South Dakota, Alaska, Montana, Idaho, etc. who cares?
You nailed it. The Demographics of California are solidly Democrat now and for the foreseeable future. This is a one party state. I don’t know why the GOP would even bother to contest it. George Bush helped Bill Clinton flood California with immigrants, legal and illegal. You reap what you sow. This after a flood of east coast liberals colonized the state.
California is doomed. The GOP just hasn’t figured it out yet. Then again, maybe they have, which is why they let a RINO waste all her own money running for governor, rather than waste any party money on it.
Thats true and there wasnt one conservative among them. The most conservative candidate almost won, dragging the results out for three weeks.

I think Steve Cooley and Meg Whitman probably agreed on almost every issue...I like Cooley...But, he was not more conservative than Fiorina or Whitman...
As CA goes, so goes, not too long after, the nation. Also bear in mind that the Democrat registration process in CA is now institutionalized. That is, the votes of illegal aliens live or dead, are worth more than Republican votes because they are reliable. They always turn out.
The GOP, in addition to doing a lousy job all- around, is particularly inept when it comes to registering the dead, the incarcerated, and absent multi-voters.
