A Clayton County mother of six said the family dog did what he always did when he saw someone. He barked.
But when "Boomer" started barking and running toward a police officer Saturday morning, the officer shot the dog and killed it, Lawrene King told the AJC Sunday night.
Hes a golden retriever," King said. "He barks, but hes never bitten anyone.
A Clayton County police officer was on foot patrol on North Shore Drive when the dog jumped off a porch and started barking and running toward the officer, Capt. Tina Daniel said. The officer ordered the dog to stop and when it didn't, the officer shot and killed the animal in its yard, Daniel said.
The officer, whose name was not released, was responding to a call reporting a suspicious person, police said.

The collars only work when you get close to the line and/if when the dog jumps over it ... voila then there are no shocks going on.
Big dogs can be real scary to people that are not knowledgeable about dogs.
This particular incident was sad and unnecessary. Dogs can not be left to run free without the owner being with them. There are businesses that use dogs as night guards at their businesses. MO.
Yep ...
Don't mail carriers simply carry mace and pepper spray for nuisance dogs and for the safety of the neighborhood?
Maybe the mail carrier was introduced to the dog under different circumstances
Mail carriers change routes all the time, new carriers start on the job daily, people obtain new dogs etc, etc...
With billions spent on law enforcement, why are they not equipped with pepper spray and or mace, like mail carriers routinely use in situations like this?

This is a failure of the dog owner to set his system up properly. I have mine set for a 30' barrier. Also, most systems have multiple sets of prongs to use on the collar. My dog has fairly long hair so we went with the longer set. Further, she's a bit of a speed demon so she doesn't get the "warning" buzz... She just gets the ZAP. She's learned quick where those boundaries are at.
Actually the cattle dog is one quarter border collie. You can tell which quarter too because there is one mobius strip across his back which is black and curly hair which is totally not cattle dog and his eyes are different. He does the border collie thing of sticking to one master like glue (Mr. Mercat). Best dog we’ve ever had.
The dog was IN IT’s OWN YARD! It was controlled from leaving the premises by an electronic system. It was barking at a stranger and protecting it’s territory (a natural instinct), which is legal and what it was supposed to do. This officer should be in jail and be banned from police work for life. If this had happened on my property he would probably be dead. I agree with the other poster that called you an idiot.
You really think the blame lies with the owner when someone comes onto his property and shoots the dog which is lawfully on the property. Wow! So then the police and government must always be right no matter what then? This was a Golden Retriever, not a pit bull. You obviously don’t know dogs.
“After being conditioned by the zaps, most dogs never venture beyond the perimeter....” We had a totally crazy but very dear pointer-setter mix. He kept breaking out of the yards to go on jaunts through the neighborhood. As a last resort, we got an invisible fence. He would sit as near the fence as he could tolerate until he drained the battery. Then, somehow, he’d chew any of the exposed wire and break the circuit in as many places as possible. He drove me bonkers, LOL! I still miss him.
Being lighter dogs can get up to speed faster than humans.
Interesting that the dog had to be ON THE PORCH RESTING when the officer pulled his gun out of its holster.
I don't believe the cop pulled on a resting dog ~ rather, he was skulking around gun in hand looking for the guy with the meat truck ~ a dastardly criminal dispensing dead animal parts in a pristine upscale neighborhood. How dare he clutter up the place by parking in the driveway! (/s)
I was talking to the other poster specifically about the anecdote he was talking about, not the one in the original thread topic.
Your dog definitely tricked out the system.
“This police officer obviously has had inadequate training.” In the early 90’s, I took a concealed carry course. Faculty was local police department. They assessed a person’s situational assessment skills using FATS (Firearms Training Simulator or something like that.) Not only could they document the shooter’s response under emergency conditions, they also documented the shooter’s accuracy with the laser-gun device. Don’t police departments screen their applicants for psychological stability?
On the clock thing, it has been that way for months. If they’re working on it, it is past time to call in outside help that can git ‘er done!
“Just curious...”
Here, let me satisfy your curiosity.
Control your animal if you care about it. If it makes a credible display of aggression it’s liable to be killed.
I don’t think you would take the risk of being mauled so don’t expect anyone else to.
Pick your battles. Go after the cops that make obviously bad shoots. Foaming at the mouth over questionable incidents makes one look like a dumbass.
Hope that helped. PLMerite out.

*guffaw*
If it is doing so from MY property, it is doing its job. If you kill it, I'm killing you.
Go after the cops that make obviously bad shoots.
This was a bad shoot, your whiny mouth-breathing aside.
“This was a bad shoot, your whiny mouth-breathing aside.”
Well, hey. Go do something about it and get back to us.
I’m not your enemy.
