A broken campaign pledge by Gov. Deval Patrick could end up costing Massachusetts ratepayers big bucks if yet another massive wind farm is built off the coast of Marthas Vineyard.
When he first ran for governor in 2005, the then-relatively unknown Patrick broke out of the Democratic pack by endorsing the controversial Cape Wind project.
But Patricks support came with a little-noticed catch: He said Cape Winds developer should compromise by agreeing to a 10-year freeze on electric rates once the 130-turbine wind farm was up and running.
But five years later, Patricks Department of Public Utilities approved a 15-year Cape Wind rate deal with 3.5 percent annual increases - on top of a starting rate thats more than twice the current cost of electricity generated by fossil-fuel generated power plants.

You mean a Democrat Governor of Massachusetts has lied to the people? I am stunned. STUNNED.
So WHAT? This is exactly what MASS. voters choose election after election. They have proudly chosen the current state government, from top to bottom, thusly putting the lie to their soon to be hysterical complaining.
That’s the trouble with getting what you wish for. Happy?
Meanwhile, virtually all of the electricity generated by a NUCLEAR power plant just north of the MA/NH border (Seabrook) gets shipped down to Mass.
Wait . . . does this have to do with UNION construction jobs? Lots of political paybacks to Friends of Deval? Yup. The Massholes voted for it! What a bunch of maroons.
There was an article in NH Union Leader yesterday that stated they would be paying $.18/kw for Cape Wind electricity deliverd to the shore grid. They(MA) are currently paying $.08-.09/KW(not including delivery cost).
Do the math.
However, they also stated that the $.18 did not take into account that ALL electricty providers are REQUIRED to generate or buy credits from some renewable source(wind, solar, etc) by federal mandate.
I live in NH. We could have purchased all our electricty from Quebec Hydro. Instead we built a nuclear power plant resulting in the HIGHEST electrical rates in the country.
“It’s bad enough to build a wind farm (dubious value at best) on land, but in the ocean off Martha’s Vineyard?”
It’s because they couldn’t afford to buy land on Cape Cod, MV, Nantucket for this project.
Doesn’ t matter who builds it. It is about corporations get guaranteed profits by buying government to force people to buy their higher priced products. The GOP loves this too.
In this case Deval is in bed with ...Big Wind Power.
If NH had a series of smaller nuclear plants like those found in France (or even the one operated for decades in Rowe Massachusetts) we’d be in terrific shape.
Oh jeez! There’s a mug that even a mother would slap.
I no longer care... let them fail like nevada and california.
LLS
The nuke plant should raise its rates to MA so that they are “competitive”.
Can’t. PUC/FERC sets the rates for baseload plants.
Wait until they try to maintain dozens of wind systems off the coast. It will be a nightmare. They are all crazy. The statistics on wind power are there for all to see.
