Barak to Gates: Buy 'Namer' Vehicles for US Army
by Gil Ronen
Defense Minister Ehud Barak met with his American counterpart, Robert Gates, in Washington Monday. The two reportedly discussed various issues pertaining to maintaining Israel's qualitative military advantage over its neighbors, the Iranian threat, and the situation in Lebanon, as well as continuing the nations' cooperation on active defense systems against rockets and missiles fired at Israel.
Barak also tried to convince Gates that the US military should purchase Israel-produced Namer [pronounced Nuh-MEHR, the word means 'tiger' in Hebrew] infantry fighting vehicles.
The Namer IFV is based on a Merkava Mark IV chassis and armed with either M2 Browning machine gun or Mk 19 grenade launcher mounted on a Samson Remote Controlled Weapon Station, It also has another 7.62 mm MAG machine gun and a 60 mm mortar.
Namer carries up to 12 crewmen and infantrymen and a stretcher, or two stretchers and medical equipment.
Barak told Gates that the

Thrilling!!!
Congress outlawed that vehicle.
(I believe with the agenda of reducing family size)
Thanks for the ping.....Namer is a true urban assault vehicle....a can of whoopass x12 inside every one of them.
That is one behemoth of a wagon!
Call me crazy, but I have been wanting a 1968 to ‘72 Vista Cruiser for years now.
The engine placement would definitely be an issue. The Israelis and Russians tried to address this with the heavies they made from old T-54/55’s (the Achzarit and the BTR-T) but neither look wholly to have been successful. The Israelis somehow managed to squeeze in a rear door next to the engine, but it sticks out like a sore thumb. Russia apparently is satisfied with having the troops jump out of roof hatches(!).
The Israeli Merkava (”Chariot” in Hebrew) Mk IV main battle tank (MBT) has a front-mounted engine-transmission combination, with rear door. The Merkava MBT can carry four infantrymen in the rear in addition to their crew. The Merkava MBT is armored accordingly. The Merkava-derived APC “Namer” shares these attributes.
Alternately, the M113A3 “Gavin” is more of a lightly armored “battle taxi” for infantry that's designed to protect the occupants from shell fragments. The M2/M3 Bradley/Chaffee armored infantry fighting vehicles are very much improvements over the M113, but neither can compete with “Namer” for use in the urban warfare environment.
“Namer” puts its troopers under heavy armor and has a remotely controlled weapons system with day/night targeting ability. Combine this with the IDF “Trophy” vehicle defense system against AT rockets and missiles and you have the most advanced APC available today.

I posted before I read the article. Sorry for the confusion.

I will not be at all surprised to see Israel field the first combat robots. Thanks sukhoi-30mki.
THe Merkava was designed from the ground up tp be the most survivable MBT ever.
And has worked out pretty well.
If youd like to be on or off, please FR mail me.
