How hasd this worked out in with the IDF? I remember reading an article in the NYT which said (of course) that all was hunky-dory but haven’t read anything on gays in the israeli forces for a long time.

Israel has a conscript army, so pretty much everybody has to serve in some capacity (apart from religious exemptions).
However, openly gay troops are kept in separate IDF units, usually performing rear support functions.
