Legislature Passes Gleason Legislation to Heighten Safety for Michigan Residents and StudentsGleason bills will encourage gun safety education for students, help cleanup contaminated sites in local communities, and strengthen health regulations in tattoo parlors |

LANSINGThe Michigan Legislature recently voted to pass several bills sponsored by Senator John J. Gleason, including his legislation to increase programs for gun safety in public schools. Under Senate Bill 1402, the Michigan Department of Education (MDE) is required to develop or adopt a model gun safety program based on the Eddie Eagle curriculum developed by the National Rifle Association to promote gun accident prevention. Beginning in the 2011 2012 school year public schools across the state will be encouraged to adopt the model program developed by the MDE. Eddie the Eagle is a friendly character with a serious lesson who can teach our children how to stay safe when they encounter a firearm, said Senator Gleason. This program can save lives by promoting caution, safety and responsibility. The incidents of kids accidentally discharging or firing a gun are an avoidable tragedy, and this program can help prevent those. The Eddie Eagle GunSafe Program began in 1988 to educate children pre-Kindergarten through Third Grades. Its four step message for children who find a gun is simple, STOP. Dont touch. Leave the Area. Tell an Adult. The program has reached more than 21 million children and was developed with the cooperative efforts of such qualified professionals as clinical psychologists, teachers, and law enforcement personnel. In the final days of the 2009-2010 legislative session, the Legislature passed several other important pieces of legislation introduced by Senator Gleason. Senate Bill 1348 was passed as part of a package of bills designed to streamline the cleanup process for contaminated sites to help businesses put them back to use in local communities. Gleasons bill will create a process to clean up sites, and allow businesses to put them to good use while protecting Michigan families and the environment. It establishes a procedure that enables a person or business to clean up small or simple problems quickly and report to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment after the work is completed. The aim of this bill is to sidestep unnecessary steps and cut down on red tape while helping parts of Genesee County, metro Detroit and other urban areas clean up former industrial sites safely for communities. I have been working hard the last several years to see these bills become law and better protect Michigan citizens, Gleason said. Its long overdue for the red tape to be cut in order to help revitalize our communities, and pass legislation to make Michigan a better and safer place to live. With the Legislatures passage of Senate Bill 1486, tattoo parlors across Michigan will be safer. This bill increases safety measures by requiring tattoo businesses to maintain a blood borne infectious disease exposure control plan with employee training. This bill would also increase health department enforcement authority and penalties for license violations, and require minors to get parental consent for tattoos or piercing. This will keep patrons and employees alike safer when getting and administering tattoos and body piercings. # # # |
Wow! I saw “safety” in the headline and cringed, till I read the article. This might actually contribute to safety, unlike the statist anti-rights stuff those oxygen thieves are always coming up with.

Clawson, 55, is challenging incumbent Sen. John Gleason (D-Flushing) for the position. He filed formal candidacy papers with the Genesee County Clerk and Michigan Secretary of State last week and will appear on the November ballot. The 27th District serves residents in the cities of Flint, Fenton, Flushing, Linden, Montrose, Swartz Creek and the townships of Argentine, Clayton, Fenton, Gaines, Genesee, and Mundy.
Clawson is a member of the Libertarian Party of Michigans executive board. He is also a member of the Genesee Tea Party. His campaign will be managed by Genesee Tea Party leader and co-founder Loren Bearup, a 16-year UAW Local 9699 member.
Clawson states as follows:
The voters of the 27th District now have a clear choice. John Gleason is taxpayer-fed. Im a fed-up taxpayer. I am working to make Michigans government fair, open and honest. Both Democrats and Republicans have proven they are utterly incapable of leading. Its long past time for new blood and new ideas in Lansing. We have to push the political hacks out of the way and get Michigan back on the right track.
We must drain the swamp in Lansing. Michigan government comes at the people, not from the people. It is out of control. It is too big, too expensive, too ineffective and too out of touch with the citizens. We must dramatically shrink its size and roll back red tape. Michigan citizens are taxed enough already. We must change our tax laws so businesses will take root here and citizens can build personal wealth.
“Its four step message for children who find a gun is simple, STOP. Dont touch. Leave the Area. Tell an Adult. “
Okay, telling an adult would be the right thing to do but not just any old adult...Hopefully, a kid would know where to find a RESPONSIBLE adult.
