FORT LEWIS, Wa. — Mark Zuckerberg is a name I grew quite familiar with even through my year in Kandahar. Facebook was the novelty through which I interacted with most of the world back home. Though it was accessible only on our trips to the forward operating base — no connectivity on our stranded outpost in the Zhari District. Despite all that Facebook meant to me while at war, I was less than thrilled to find that Mr. Zuckerberg had been named Time Magazine’s Person of the Year.
The distinguished title goes to the man or woman deemed to have had the most influence through the year’s events. Other notable names on the short list included Julian Assange of WikiLeaks, Afghanistan’s President Hamid Karzai, The Tea Party, and the Chilean Miners.
As I read through this year’s selection summary, my eyes scanned for even the mention of one name. A name that has grown to mean so much to so many Americans, but unfortunately too few to be considered “influential”. That man was Staff Sgt. Salvatore A. Giunta: the first Congressional Medal of Honor recipient in the Global War on Terror, and the youngest living recipient by 35 years (he is 25 years old, there are three living recipients who are currently 60 years old).
I stared at Zuckerberg’s bright pale face on the cover of Time; his skin almost as white as the pages upon which the article was written. I contrasted it with the deep tan covering my soldiers’ faces along contours not covered by eye-protection and chin-straps.

Why should one be surprised? TIME also had Hitler as Person of the Year back in the early 20th century. An irrelevant magazine with an irrelevant “award”.

I think Staff Sgt. Salvatore A. Giunta should’ve received it. I do have to say, my 6 1/2 yrs in Iraq now would be a lot less bearable if I didn’t have FB. It’s awesome to be able to keep up with family and friends like you can on there. I remember in the early 80’s getting mail 4 or 5 weeks after it was sent, and that was by mail bag on a weekly flight into Turkey at an isolated remote base. The look on guys faces when they didn’t have a letter in that once a week mail drop were tough, as I’m sure mine was. Times are sure different.......

After seeing that Sorkin-based drivel "The Social Network", I couldn't wait to get home to my computer... so I could dump everything I had out on Facebook and cancel my account!
Try logging in again. Facebook never deletes any of your information.
All of the friends you had will still be there.
They basically just mothball your account until you deactivate it. There is no “Delete” in his world.
Yes, I know that it all stays around. I "unfriended" everyone, "unliked" anything I'd tagged, deleted all pictures except for a few I'd posted in a public group of old friends, took everything off my profile, then told them to take a flying leap.
I know it all worked because I got a call from my air-head SIL about 3 days later because she couldn't "tag" me in a picture of her mugging at some bar so I'd see the picture and show it to the wife. This after I had asked her not to do it a few times and practically yelled at her not to post pictures of her kids (9 and 4) there.
You can deactivate your account, but if you ever try to log in again, it will remember you and welcome you back to the world of facebook.
Only website in the world I know that does that. Google may. They are evil too.
