I would have thought the gunshot would have ignited the fumes from the gas that had been thrown on the clerk.
Mythbusters a few episodes ago did something similar. They filled a little box with natural gas and tried to ignite it with a gunshot - didn’t work. Evidently the muzzle flash moves too fast to provide enough heat for ignition.

That idea was pretty well disproven on Mythbusters. I know some here have a problem with that show but for this one I can’t really challenge their methodology.

I read something about this years ago...
During the Japanese invasion of the Phillippines a group of cut off GIs tried to start a fire for warmth one night. They soaked a blanket in gasoline and fired a shot into it. The gas would not light no matter how many times they shot into it. They had no matches.
