It is fairly common for people in gun fights to not know how many shots they have fired.

It is fairly common for people in gun fights to not know how many shots they have fired. I am aware of that fact.
The intended point was that if you emptied the magazine you would know how many shots you had fired.

Yes but you still might have not know how many shots you fired When the slide locks back you've emptied the mag, so one should know. If the slide doesn't lock back, count the unfired rounds and subtract.
