I don’t think this cop instigated a confrontation, but I do believe that he should have taken more time. I don’t even hear the victim making any comments, all I hear is the cop telling him to drop the knife and then bang, bang, bang.

The only other voice I hear is the woman asking him why he shot. Even she had more sense than this officer.

I’m glad to see that this dept. says the shooting was not justified. The victim may have been drunk and walking away. If the officer wanted to stop him he could have walked up behind him and used a taser, or simply spun the guy to the ground, if he was afraid the guy was dangerous.

I watched the video again, the cop had something in his right hand as he walked in front of the camera, I couldn’t tell if it was his baton or his weapon. Anyone else see that? If he had his weapon in hand, I think the cops mind was made up as to what he was going to do.

Oh yeah, he had his gun drawn. That’s what he’s got in his hand.

And he’s got it up and ready to fire, not down or behind his back for a “just in case.” He’s ready to start popping, high ready. All he’s got to do is extend his arms out and start shooting.

If there was nobody around, and every cop knows about the 21 foot rule, why does he get within 10 feet? He puts himself in danger if he does that. And shoots the guy as he’s turning away?

He’s toast.

The cop says he had a knife and turned toward me. Well, no shit - you come up BEHIND the guy and yell at him, what a surprise that he turned toward you. This cop better start practicing picking up soap in the shower without bending over.

....So, like I said, I’m witholding judgement until I see the reason for the officer’s stop. If he had a legitimate reason for stopping Mr. Williams, then what unfolded may be ruled justified. If not, then he will have a hard time not facing charges.

Whoa! The reason for the stop is irrelevant. Whether the officer's life was in danger is relevant. Are you suggesting premeditation?

Seven seconds. Seven seconds?! Many people just freeze in a moment like this. He didn’t lunge after the officer or attempt in any way to injure the officer. Notice on the tape that the officer said he was cutting up a piece of board and he wouldn’t drop the knife. The officer could have backed up and given him more commands without putting himself in danger. I personally believe the victim simply froze for a second or two.. just froze and that cost him his life. Sad.

If this cop knew the victim, shouldn't he have used a different approach?

I wasn't trying to say what he should have done, just that sometimes if you have an emotional past with someone, you react differently than you would with a complete stranger. Or maybe it wasn't personal, the cop just had a problem with the street people and lost it.

Because if the cop was sent there and clears like this: “Just a man with a knife whittling some wood” and this guy walks down the street and starts whittling someones face, guess who gets in trouble?

NOT THE COP!!!!

Cops have no Constitutional duty to protect us. See Bell v. Thompson, No. 04-514 USSC

So you can pack up that little piece of BS. That dog won't hunt.

The cop's gun is drawn as he gets out of the car. His mind is already made up. I believe I witnessed a hit on video. Horrible and frightening.

Might not have a constituional duty, but guess who still gets sued and goes to jail for not doing his duty?

Hint: It’s not the dog.

Now think.

Who says anything about justifying anything?

Think, man, think.

You are saying stupid things.

If the cop ignored the whittler and the whittler subsequently stabbed someone the cop would not go to jail for ignoring the whittler.

Like a freaking parade! Must have been 20 or more cops in less only 1.5 minutes?

We noticed...Why is there so many cops in that area? Is that an extreme high crime area?

If so, why such a reaction to some guy so involved in whittling, he didn't even look at the cop when he crossed the intersection...
