Gun regulators propose emergency plan (registration for multiple sales of some semiautomatic rifles)
Washington Post ^ | December 17, 2010 | James V. Grimaldi and Sari Horwitz

To stem the flow of guns to Mexico, federal firearms regulators are proposing an emergency requirement that certain gun dealers along the southwestern border report bulk sales of so-called assault weapons beginning as soon as January.

Dealers would be required to alert authorities when they sell within five consecutive business days two or more semiautomatic rifles greater than .22 caliber with detachable magazines, according to the draft obtained by The Washington Post. Semiautomatic rifles such as AK-47s and AR-15s are favored by drug-trafficking organizations fighting the Mexican government.

ATF chief spokesman Scot Thomasson declined to comment.

The plan by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives revives a proposal that has languished at the Justice Department and in the Obama administration for several months, according to people with knowledge of the proposal who spoke on the condition of anonymity because...

--snip--

The idea of such a requirement is so controversial to many gun owners that administration officials proceeded cautiously for fear of provoking the National Rifle Association, sources said.

The proposal could mark the gun lobby's first major showdown with the administration.

On Thursday, Chris W. Cox, the NRA's chief lobbyist, lambasted the plan as an attempt to create a national gun registry.

"This administration does not have the guts to build a wall, but they do have the audacity to blame and register gun owners for Mexico's problems," Cox said. "NRA supports legitimate efforts to stop criminal activity, but we will not stand idle while our Second Amendment is sacrificed for politics."

One of those pushing the administration to act was New York Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg's office and his policy adviser, John Feinblatt, who first proposed such a requirement early in the administration. "Sixteen months ago, we called for it," Feinblatt said. "It's time to do it."...

There is no “flow of guns to Mexico”, at least not from the US. These people are totally evil and will use any excuse they can think of to hamper US citizens from buying firearms.

Complete and total bullshit!!!

No serious person participating in the violence in Mexico would be interested in a ‘street legal’ semiauto rifle(so called “assault rifles”) from a US gun shop.

We need to fight this. It may seem reasonable to some people, but its a slippery slope. Who knows what else this 'emergency regulation' applies to that they haven't bothered to mention?

If they want to stop guns getting into Mexico, then close the damn border!!

True. They have easy access to fully-automatic weapons off the black market. They don’t need to legally buy semi-autos in the USA! This is a weak excuse.

Our forefathers had it together and knew well what was important to maintain a government by the people and to stifle any possibility of tyranny.

It took one whole amendment before freedom of firearm ownership thoughtfully became integral in maintaining freedom via the Constitution.

Every time I see one of these people buying guns for a Mexico Drug Gang, they are illegal themselves. I don’t believe that the US is their primary source for rifles that are semi-auto and automatic. I believe these are coming from Cuba and Venezuela.

“To stem the ALLEGED flow of guns to Mexico, “!

Why run the risk of getting your illegal gun confiscated while being smuggled across the border when you can just demand the local military base surrender ALL of theirs?
And they do comply, to save their families.

Sure a lot of the guns came from the U.S., given to the Mex. government!

This is all a smokescreen, preliminary steps to enact a new AW Ban.

This is also the third thread today to bring this up.

These drug dealer types have the money to buy the raw castings in bulk and have them machined into their weapons for a lot less than they could purchase them for in the US. The prints for the AR's and AK's are available online, and the machine work is simple by machine shop standards. All you need is a decent mill or drill press and broach. Not rocket science.

On their big showboat sting, which cost millions, they netted 16 guns.

16.

The guns used by the cartels are from the Mexican military and they damned well know it.

I don't read too good. Where did it state 'registration'?

Omigosh. You could just set your watch by this. As soon as Travers assumes command of the ATF, they have to start the registration drumbeat.

The outcome will NOT be good.

They compile the reports. That's a database. It's de facto registration. The restriction on the length of the title prevented the inclusion of de facto.

It's Traver. I'm expecting a recess appointment. He won't be confirmed by the Senate, IMHO.

They just keep chipping away at our rights and freedoms.

Liberals have trouble sleeping at night when they know people are freely engaging in activities that aren’t monitored, controlled and limited by the government.

Governments reaction to power is interesting to watch.

It loves technology that gives it an edge against the people: UAVs, Scanners, assault rifles, etc.

It fears technology that gives an edge to the people: Talk Radio, the Internet, assault rifles, etc.

I’m reading all 85 of the Federalists with my son and over and over again you see that American government was designed to be small. Government simply cannot be trusted past a certain size and scope.
