Congress Sends Tax Cut Bill to Obama as Logjam Ends
New York Times ^ | December 16, 2010 | DAVID M. HERSZENHORN

Congress approved an $801 billion package of tax cuts and $57 billion for extended unemployment insurance at midnight Thursday. The vote sealed the first major deal between President Obama and Congressional Republicans as Democrats put aside their objections and bowed to the realignment of power brought about by their crushing election losses.

The bipartisan support for tax deal also underscored the urgency felt by the administration and by lawmakers in both parties to prop up the still-struggling economy and to prevent an across-the-board tax increased that was set to occur if the rates enacted under President George W. Bush had expired, as scheduled, at the end of the month.

Administration officials said Mr. Obama would sign the package into law on Friday.

The 277-to-148 vote in the House came after a tense night in which Liberal Democrats skirmished with party leaders over a proposed vote on an amendment to tax more wealthy estates and at a higher rate than was included in a provision agreed to by the Obama administration.

The liberals, many of them angry about the prospect of continuing the tax policies of President George W. Bush, complained that party leaders had structured the debate so that they could not vote in favor of the amendment to the estate tax provision without also voting in favor of the entire package.

Representative Charles B. Rangel, Democrat of New York, said he supported the change in the estate tax, which he said would save $23 billion. But, he complained, “in order to do that I would have to accept the remainder of the Senate bill.”

The bill approved by Congress extends for two years all of the income tax cuts enacted under Mr. Bush and provides a one-year payroll tax cut for most American workers.

You beat me to it. The NY Times lied in their first sentence. Liberals sure are predictable when honesty is involved.

Which should be obvious to anyone who should know that the Obama would never support an authentic tax cut.

"as Democrats put aside their objections and bowed to the realignment of power brought about by their crushing election losses."

This is a net meaningless gesture that doesn't even begin to recognize the "crushing election losses!"

Retaining current tax rates for a mere two years while squandering millions on over a year of extending unemployment welfare payments is spitting on the nearly unprecedented success achieved by the tea party and conservatives like most FReepers!!!

This was a "bow" in the opposite direction from the victors, while pulling their pants down and "mooning" the champions of justice if you ask me!!!

“There are no tax cuts.”

You’re right, but this prevented Obama tax increases.

Not that I like this bill, because I don’t.

It’s funny how the LSM spins things...and how many people still buy their kind of crap.

Um.... I don't think you can really use those two words in the same sentence.

There is no problem using those two words in the same sentence. Here is an example...liberals are never honest, and you can take that to the bank. See, easy.
