***My late father was a WWII veteran - he and many of his friends from the same era despised the Red Cross.***

My mom said the same thing about them during WWII.

They worked their butts off knitting socks and donoating to the RC. Then word came back from the soldiers that much of the stuff was going to behind the lines officers and when a RC person brought doughnuts to the front line infantry, each soldier received 1/4 of a doughnut.

it was a urban legend and never happened. the Salvation Army keeps it alive today to raise funds
