DeMint Drops Bid to Delay Action on New START (selling America OUT)
National Journal ^ | December 15, 2010 | By Megan Scully and Rebecca Kaplan

Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., backed off threats today to force a reading of the New START arms-reduction treaty after the White House assailed the delay tactic as a “new low.”

Senate leaders had estimated that a full reading of the accord could take 15 hours, which would have thrown a wrench into ambitious plans to finish work on New START, an omnibus spending bill, and several other pieces of legislation before the Senate adjourns for the year.

Correct, Demint got the delays in START’s movement he sought, just in a different form. And we still have his vow to have the entire 2,000 page, omnibus spending bill read aloud to watch out for.

"Senator DeMint opposes ramming the controversial START Treaty in the lame duck session," Denton said. "After Senator DeMint asked for the entire treaty to be read aloud to slow down the process, Senator Reid relented and agreed to delay the debate until tomorrow."

do they ... have enough support in the Senate to secure the 67 votes required for ratification of a treaty …?

Doesn't look like Jim DeMint gave up anything to me.

It doesn't matter to anyone, except possibly the Clerk of the House, whether the Treaty gets read. The important thing is how much time debating it eats up. Reid agreed to give up the time it would take to read the bill and DeMint agreed to save the Clerk's voice. This little transaction changed nothing of substance. DeMint is milking his senatorial privilege for as much delay as possible. If the votes are there for START it will be confirmed if they aren't it won't be confirmed. In the mean time Jim DeMint is seeing to it that the process takes up as much time as possible, limiting Reid's capacity to do damage in the little time he has left with the 111th.

I guess we've been betrayed so often we come to expect it. We would all do well to stop and think before forming the circular firing squad.

I hope your right. I have been watching Demint for some time, and I think I'll wait, and see myself. I sure do’s seem everything is Monday morning quarterbacking, and second guessing these days with immediate, and infinite news sources.

START prevents us from building a missile defense system and it also prevents us from modernizing our nuclear weapons. The provision that allows for verification of Russia’s arms is “bogus’. Russia will only allow us to verify what they authorize. No guarantees they will authorize any verifications.

Additionally, we’re supposed to reduce our weapons while China adds to its nuclear arsenal and delivery systems and other weapons.

I hope your right.

I think his actions speak louder than words. I can't think of another Senator who has done more to bring real conservatives to the Senate.

Seems people here are ready to burn DeMint at the stake. Why doesn’t he get a pass? Is that because he actually has to put his money where his mouth is? He doesn’t have a bevy of supporters willing to gloss over his faux pas for him.

Why is he any different?

Your post is completely illogical.

We were talking about Sarah Palin, were we not?

DeMint himself said he would read the bill, then he backed off.

He should get a pass? What for?

The whole issue is that DeMint opened his mouth of his own free will and then he caved. That si significant at this point in time, because had he followed through on his promise, he could have tied up the Senate for a whole day, which would have increased the chances of this Lame Duck Session creating less damage.

Just another example of the Republicans not standing their ground.

What is wrong with these people - isn't there just ONE who will fight? Demint has said he is retiring after this term, so what does he have to lose by standing up against this terrible treaty that weakens American both militarily and economically?

It's a very sad day when there is no one you can count on to stand up for priniciple.

Yes. Do you know why DeMint decided not to read it aloud? Probably not.

Maybe they don’t have enough votes to pass it.

Well guys, I guess we’re on our own now. I can’t trust the leadership of these ass-clowns anymore. IT’s been one thing after another in this lame duck session, and their remarks about ‘working together’ and all that happy horse-sh1t.

SHAME ON YOU FOR POSTING THIS BS HEADLINE. The article says nothing of the kind, you might want to read it before spouting off. McConnell called it off not Senator DeMint.

I am so sick of FReepers who just read a headline and start spouting off without the facts.

It is the leftist propaganda machine reporting this with the twist to make DeMint look bad and all you idiots are falling for it. Disgusting.

If he succeeded in getting the Treaty killed he won.

Yes, he won one skirmish, but the battle continues to rage. He could have still called in this air strike to push the enemy back even further.

The enemy agreed to fall back from one hill, and he agreed not to bomb their main position. That's not how you win wars.

One would think that FReepers would know enough not to take the MSM at their word. They lie; they disseminate propaganda designed to make our side look bad.

And, still, we fall for it...
