WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Internal Revenue Service is making it a bit riskier to cheat on your taxes. The tax agency increased the number of returns it audited by nearly 11 percent this year, statistics released Wednesday show. Wealthy taxpayers and big businesses were most likely to be targeted. The IRS also stepped up audits of charities and other tax-exempt organizations.

Or just conservatives in general.
Certainly they missed Rangel.

“...Audits of charities....
Did they go after your church or synagogue?...”
Yep. Fortunately, I had letters, receipts and proper docs to substantiate their request.
Effing no good bastards!
EITC is worth about $58 billion ~ TOTAL VALUE.
BTW, IRS hides some of the audit costs by claiming they are actually part of the normal operations involved in determining the eligibility of graduate students for student loans ~ but all their questions concern EITC.
Wealthiest targeted.
Doh, they are going to audit the poor???
My small business got a visit this year for the first time in 12 years ... then my family, first time ever ... they were disappointed they couldn’t find anything, I’m sure. And we are by no means “the wealthy” ... so I guess they are going to hire more and come after more. Pretty soon, they will have so many laws that even the Accountants won’t be able to keep up, then they can triple down on us with taxes, fines and fees.
Weird how they can’t catch John Kerry...
I wish they’d audit more “charities”—so many of them are phony ways for the rich to make our lives miserable and take a deduction for doing so.
Or mosque? Or patriotic charity?
Aside from a brief threat from Nixon, I believe it was Clinton who is most responsible for initiating the politicizing of the IRS' focus of attention.
Seems a massive waste of resources to go after college kids.
"Wealthiest" meaning those who actually pay taxes?
“Doh, they are going to audit the poor???”
Do you understand the level of fraud in refundable tax credits? There are 11 refundable tax credits and other non refundable tax credits. There has been lots of fraud in the refundable tax credits for the lower income including the EITC, Make Work Pay, ... The IRS has backed off easy audit targets because the Democrats complained. Now the IRS has declared war on small businesses.
Bet a dime Rush, Hannity, Beck and Bill O get audited yearly7.
