Thune: Deal critics want higher taxes
Politico ^ | 12/14/2010 | Kasie Hunt

Posted on 12/14/2010 5:40:47 PM PST by Qbert

South Dakota Sen. John Thune took a veiled swipe at Mitt Romney on the Senate floor Tuesday, saying it’s “easy” and “possibly even politically expedient to stand on the sidelines and criticize” the tax cut proposal backed by President Obama and GOP congressional leaders.

“Inaction is not an option, and advocating against this proposal is no different than advocating for higher taxes,” Thune said in a Tuesday afternoon speech. Thune voted to advance the proposal in the Senate on Monday. Just a handful of Republicans, including possible 2012 candidate Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), opposed it.

Thune did not mention Romney by name, but his remarks come on the heels of the former Massachusetts governor’s op-ed in Tuesday's USA Today, a piece that slammed the tax deal as a “disappointing agreement” that will add to the deficit and serves Democrats’ political needs.

“The deal delivers short-term economic stimulus, and it does so at the very time [Obama] wants it most, before the 2012 elections,” Romney wrote.

Thune, who is contemplating a bid for the Republican presidential nomination in 2012, said the proposal isn’t perfect but that not backing it amounts to a tax increase.

“If we wait for the perfect proposal, the perfect agreement, then American families and American small businesses are going to pay higher taxes just two weeks from now," Thune said. "That’s not a scare tactic; that’s not political posturing. That ... is simply a fact.”

It’s a preview of what will likely be a major Thune campaign theme: While others were out campaigning for president or hosting Fox News shows, he was in the Senate’s trenches fighting against the most damaging pieces of Obama’s agenda, including health care and repealing the Bush tax cuts for the nation’s highest earners.

advocating against this proposal is no different than advocating for higher taxes,

Bull caca. this is the kind of logic that results in an endless stream of bad legislation.

Yes he was right in there with the other establishment Republicans working to put us behind the eight ball in 2012. Let’s do our best in the lame duck session to limit the ability of our Republican House to stop the spending. Let’s ignore the 2010 election and keep spending and passing provisions that require more spending later.

What part of “stop spending” does he not understand? Or does he know we just had an election?

“advocating against this proposal is no different than advocating for higher taxes,” Thune said.

It’s embarrassing to see such idiocy on public display.

Yes - heartening that it appears he’s going to run and hit Romney...I wish this weren’t the issue that he started with...but strange to see so many on here siding with Romney on this.

I gather Thune is standing tall for ethanol. I guess this proves the GOP really has some principles after all.
