COLUMBIA FALLS - A Columbia Falls girl who was suspended from school for leaving a hunting rifle locked in the trunk of her car will return to school on Tuesday.
Members of the Columbia Falls School Board have voted unanimously not to expel Demari DeReu and almost two weeks into a suspension from school she'll be returning to Columbia Falls High School.
The Columbia Falls School Board voted unanimously Monday evening to allow the teen to school without being expelled, but not before lengthy discussion and an emotional explanation took place.
"It's not fair to hear that this isn't going to affect my college education, when I already have two Fs," DeReu stated.
"Montana never intended for this situation to be a violation of section 20.5. 202 subsection 2," attorney Sean Franton told the board.
Members listened to the facts, the arguments and an emotional DeReu before casting their votes.
DeReu was hugged by many of her friends and family after learning she would be back in school on Tuesday, the matter would be cleared from her record at the end of the year, and that the school would help her get back on track with her work.
The pussies in Columbia Falls would crap in their pants if they had an ROTC like my HS had 60 years ago. It was in a separate building beside the HS. There was a 50’ indoor rifle range that was big enough and with enough .22 target rifles with slings for a whole class to shoot at one time...prone, sitting, kneeling and standing. We all learned to march carrying M1 Garands and we also learned how to strip and clean them. There were contests to see who could strip and put back together an M1 blindfolded the fastest. I don’t remember all the weapons that were in the building, but I do remember there was a BAR and several M1 carbines.
We wore Army uniforms one day a week and wore them in every parade the town had. ROTC was a big deal with several hundred guys...9 guys on the Battalion Staff, 26 officers in the Disc and Diamond Club, 10 guys on the Rifle Team, 4 guys in the Color Guard and 2 guys in the Bugle Corps. There were 10 guys on the Firing Squad who fired salutes at military funerals. Each officer had could pick an ROTC Sponsor. These girls wore a navy blue uniform and marched in all the parades. One of the biggest spring events each year was the Military Ball.
The Army guys who ran the ROTC program were Captain David A. Strong, M/Sgt. Albert O. Caldarelli and M/Sgt. Frank J. Stumer. We learned a lot from them. Stumer had walked across Europe during WWII. I don’t remember what unit he was with, but he said he wouldn’t touch a BAR because the life expectancy for a guy with a BAR was 3 days.
They should admit they were the ones who created the entire problem and not even require her to make up her work. Take the percentage she achieves in the work she actually completes during the non-suspension period and apply that to the missing work.
This might turn out to be a pretty good week...
Sadly I must agree. If people were serious about rebellion they'd be down at the local tavern where they can discuss it freely, not sitting around at their keyboards where they can't; where all they can say is, "Things are not that bad yet, but when they are, we'll show 'em!"
We dissembled and assembled an AR-15 for a school speech class in HS. No problem for anybody and that was in Chicago.
IIRC Chicago’s Mayor Daley just recently ended competitive riflery for Chicago High Schools.
Of course, up to that point no crime was ever committed by those students.
Underachievers!
Have they lowered the standards that far? Two F’s and she’s sitll on the honor roll?
Jerry, why not just eliminate the dumb law?
Zero tolerance is evidence only of moral turpitude.
The F's were due to her suspension. Check comment# 20.
But the familys primary concern was the impact to DeReus grades, Frampton said. Normally a 3.0 student, DeReu now has two Fs due to her suspension.
If it is a 4.0 scale she's not honor's material. If it's a 5.0 scale, then the standards of government schooling are even worse than I imagined.
